I am wondering did French Foreign Legion take a part in the war ?
Anyone heard or know something ?
Anyone heard or know something ?
Absolute rubbish.. US State Dept persistently told Saakashvilli that he was overstepping the mark and that he was walking into something.
In early July, Rice traveled to Tbilisi with the explicit intention of trying to rein him in. In her July 10 press conference, she made it clear that Washington was alarmed by his military moves.
"The violence needs to stop," said Rice. "And whoever is perpetrating it - and I've mentioned this to the president - there should not be violence."
David L Phillips, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, told the Los Angeles Times last week he believes that, despite State Department efforts to restrain the Georgian president, "Saakashvili's buddies in the White House and the Office of the Vice President kept egging him on."
But whether more specific encouragement took place or not, the deeper roots of the crisis lay in bureaucratic self-deceit about the objective of expanding NATO up to the border of a highly suspicious and proud Russia in the context of an old and volatile ethnic conflict. http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Central_Asia/JH26Ag02.html
So, whoever miscalculated there, it is clear as day that now the State Department is in damage control mode. That's my opinion, which is shared by many.
BTW, I just edited my last post #3. And I hope it's not "absolute rubbish"!
it has been vary hard to find any completly un biased reporting of this conflict. With such varied stories comming from both sides, coupled with conflicting eye witness accounts one almost had to have been there to gain any insightful information
HOW FIGHTING BROKE OUT
August 7, 3pm: OSCE monitors see build-up of Georgian artillery on roads to South Ossetia.
6.10pm: Russian peacekeepers inform OSCE of suspected Georgian artillery fire on Khetagurovo, a South Ossetian village.
7pm: Georgia declares a unilateral ceasefire.
11pm: Georgia announces that its villages are being shelled and launches attack in South Ossetia.
11.30pm: Georgian forces bombard Tskhinvali.
11.45pm: OSCE monitors report shells falling on Tskhinvali every 15-20 seconds.
August 8, 12.15am: Commander of Russian peacekeepers reports that his unit has taken casualties. Russia later announces that it has invaded Georgia to protect civilians and Russian peacekeepers.
Here's a link to the new War 08.08.08 documentary by the Russia.ru channel. A heavily biased perspective of course, but none the less a lot of interesting information. For example the Georgians handed out AK-74 assault rifles to civilians residing near S. Ossetia. And there is strong evidence of Georgian terrorist activities in S. Ossetia before the war.

US asured him that they will cover him from Russia =) But Russia beat him. Of course US didn't cover him because in all cases the cold war with Russia is much more better than a hot war (we still have 2000 nuclear cakes and US still don't have AMS against all this). And we all responsible for the wars which we provide - I think so.
