I wasn't aware that the French in particular apparently play a not insignificant role with helping map Russian air-defence and target selection.

The British Empire was supporting Nigeria for the good of the Biafran people?
Maybe you heard about that dictator... Saddam Hussein, supported by the US, the UK and France.
We ended democracy in Iran and imposed the Shah for "freedom" or for "democracy"?
We support S. Arabia for its western principles and values or for the invasion of Yemen?
The eternal interest of any given government at any given time.

Yes but what about the Roman Empire?, what about the Aztecs? Just, you know, what about loads of other dead people and long gone societies?
