The US has a number of Mi-17's at Fort Rucker that they are using to train foreign nationals to fix and fly. Converting from one airframe to another is a complex and expensive activity, particularly when a service is resource limited to the extent Afghanistan, Iraq and others are. Staying with Mi-8/17 makes sense and they have a long and reliable service record.
