AUKUS has been cancelled and we are buying 50 SSKs from China, to be called the Paul Keating Class. This is the cornerstone of the new China Australia co prosperity pact under premier Gina Rhinehart and Governor Clive Palmer.
Roll on April the 2nd. With regards to the AEW conversation, we appear to be straying from the RAN theme. Back on topic please. Feel free to cover this in the RAAF thread or ADF general thread.

Looks like the French have also learned to have a laugh at nuclear subs. Note the proposed build location for the French - UK joint build.
I'm looking forward to seeing the floating dock. Where will it be built? Half in the UK & half in France?

Previously, there has been speculation about whether all 6 Collins class will go through the LOTE when 3 Virginia’s will be acquired in the 1930’s - in this interview, Vice Admiral Mead has confirmed that they will.

Sky News: Massive Opportunity - AUKUS Workforce
There is that magic number of 8 submarines and it seems the Australian government wants to get to that number ASAP.

Six Collins and two Virginias initially with a third Virginia arriving towards the end of the thirties when the Collins start to retire. The options for two more Virginias could then be exercised to maintain submarine numbers if required.

The upgraded program will be renamed FUKUS after France joins :D

The Arafura's already have upgraded cranes, allowing them to load up to 5 mission containers. 2 on the deck below the flight deck, 10 tonne each allowable for 20 tonne total. 3 on the flight deck, however max total load on the flight deck is 11 tonne.

I've been looking for the range of the latest versions of the NSM (other than the oft quoted >100NM) and noticed this in an old Janes article:

The DoD said the acquisition of NSM Block 1A will more than double the maritime strike range of the RAN's surface fleet with the RGM-84 Harpoon Block II, which has an unclassified range of 124 km.

So, that would be a range for NSM Block 1A of >248KM or >134NM.
It's certainly a massive upgrade in anti-ship and anti-surface capability for the RAN.

I haven't seen anything about Aust minelayers since the Arafura was tipped to be one. The UK site has talked about their 11m boats doing minehunting. Is this the sort of thing we'd be looking at? In theory, the arafura could carry x3 of the drones the 11m minehunters could carry, perhaps with upgraded cranes on deck

Last I heard were plans to base these vessels on the Arafura class but that was under a different government and so far no firm order has been made. I suspect that this will be addressed when the DSR is released this month.
Looking at what the UK are doing and what I have heard about the Australian plans minewarfare will be more organic than before. While there will eventually be a few specialised ships I expect that sizable part of the MCM capability will be operated from ships like the Hunter class and other ships of opportunity.

Defence likes it’s Offshore Support Vessels, appears that another one has been procured:

Sounds like another bargain, reportedly to be $60m (in Defence budget terms, that’s a few loose coins found down the back of the lounge).

This one has reportedly been named ‘Guidance’.

That will make four now, ADV Ocean Protector, ADV Reliant and of course ABFC Ocean Shield operated by Border Force.

Interesting.

Guidance? Think someone needs guidance on ship names, cannot for the life of me work that one out.

The ADM article does suggest that she might be used as a mothership for unmanned systems/vessels, Guidance would appear to be appropriate.

Regardless, she won’t be a commissioned RAN ship, probably be known as ADV Guidance, not really worth getting wound up about that.

The Royal Navy also recently acquired a similar vessel - their capabilities must suit the direction being taken by modern navies.

Would probably make a good R&D and Trg Platform for unmanned systems, a lot more room, better facilities, accommodation etc than trying to use an OPV or a MFU.
