New Delhi, Aug. 26. (PTI): Production has commenced for inducting the 290 km range BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missiles in the Indian Navy next year, Lok Sabha was informed today.
"The navy has placed a Letter of Interest for inducting BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missiles in certain types of ships and in-shore. Production has commenced for induction in 2005," Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, said in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
He said as there was no equivalent of BrahMos missile in any other country, the Indian Navy's fire power will enhance multiple times, thereby, getting the competitive advantage in warfare.
After a series of successful flight trials from ship and land the missile has proved its accurate performance against ship target with devastative destruction capability, he added.
To another question, Mukherjee said that the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has signed two contracts with Fincantieri, an Italian Shipyard relating to design and consultancy of an Air Defence Ship (ADS), construction of which has been approved by the government.
He said contracts are for undertaking design, integration, installation and commission of the propulsion system for the ADS at a negotiated cost of 22 million euros and for consultancy in detailed engineering and documentation at a negotiated cost of six million euros.
The contract was awarded to Fincantieri on the basis of a limited global tender in which DCNI, France (now known as Armaris), BAe systems, UK and Izar, Spain also participated, he added.
