The first upgraded 155mm AUF1 self-propelled gun (SPG), designated the AUF1 TA for the French Army, has been completed by Giat Industries.

Giat plans to deliver 18 of the 94 weapons on order by December. These will be followed by 33 in 2005, 33 in 2006 and the last 10 in 2007.

The Délégation Générale pour l'Armement (DGA) defence procurement agency awarded Giat a contract in late 1999 to upgrade the AUF1 to the AUF1 TA standard and upgrade one prototype to the AUF2 standard with a 155mm/ 52-cal barrel.

For the AUF1 upgrade, an army workshop modernises the chassis in a number of areas, including the installation of a new Mack E9 diesel coupled to an ENC 200 automatic transmission. The chassis is then sent to Giat's Bourges facility, where it is mated with an upgraded turret. The upgrade includes installation of the new Thales Automatisation du Tir et des Liaisons de l'Artillerie Sol-sol (ATLAS) fire-control system, which reduces the weapon's time into action as well as increasing target accuracy.

It was expected that 174 AUF1s would be upgraded: 70 to the AUF2 standard and 104 to the AUF1 TA standard. Although the AUF2 prototype has been completed, the army has decided that, in the short term at least, this upgrade will not go ahead for cost reasons.
