The automated command and control system, ESU Sozvezdie, which has been in development for quite some time, has recently been undergoing a lot of field tests in various Russian Land Forces units. Not too long ago the 35th Motor-Rifles Brigade, in OSC East, had a brigade tactical exercise using the system.

This is a photo-set from the 5th Motor-Rifles Brigade, which shows them first using (brand new) Grusha tactical UAVs to scout for targets, then transmit them using Sozvezdie, to a 2B9 position, which then fired on targets.

I'm interested in what your opinions are based on this photoset, as well as a wider discussion of modern automated command and control systems.

The up-side of the system is that it allows rapid communication between units as small as individual squads (in one of the pictures a platoon commander is instructing his squad leaders in using the system). The downside is that individual messages are delivered as messages, and need to be opened and read, then translated manually (manually with a mouse and keyboard) to the digital map in the command center, meaning it often takes a long time to process the information.
