Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training Singapore 2009 was held from 8 to 19 Jun 2009, involved 1,500 personnel, 11 ships, 18 aircraft and two submarines (RSS Conqueror and USS City of Corpus Christi). This year's exercise was the first time that inter-submarine maneouvres was carried out. Seeking to boost interoperability further, submariners from the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the U.S. Navy (USN) interacted with each other in a submarine tracking exercise. There are a few pictures of this 15th consecutive year of exercises here.

USN and U.S. Marine Corps photos by by Senior Chief Mass Communication Specialist Susan Hammond, Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Bill Larned and Cpl. Dustin T. Schalue below.

The RSN diesel submarine RSS Conqueror (705), corvettes RSS Vigour (92) and RSS Victory (88), frigates RSS Stalwart (72) and RSS Intrepid (69) and tank landing ship RSS Endeavour (210) maneuver in formation with the dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) and guided-missile destroyers USS Chafee (DDG 90) and USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) during the at-sea phase of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT), a series of bilateral exercises held annually in Southeast Asia (SEA).

RSN frigates RSS Stalwart (72) and RSS Intrepid (69) and tank landing ship RSS Endeavour (210) maneuver in formation with the dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) and guided-missile destroyers USS Chafee (DDG 90) and USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) during the at-sea phase of CARAT, a series of bilateral exercises held annually in SEA.

Sailors remove chains and chocks as a RSAF CH-47 Chinook helicopter prepares to lift off during shipboard landing training on the flight deck of USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49). The training is part of the at-sea phase of CARAT Singapore 2009, an annual series of bilateral maritime training exercises.

After the deck landing qualifications, the RSN and the USN took part in a HADR exercise, moving mock casualties to the Harpers Ferry and the RSN tank landing ship RSS Endeavour. Singapore Army soldiers and U.S. Marines came ashore in RSN landing craft during the HADR scenario, with RSN doctors and USN hospital corpsmen evaluating mock casualties.

The USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and the RSS Resolute (69) (1 of 6 Formidable Class frigates) in formation drills. The KL Security Review website features the above picture of CARAT Singapore 2009.

I believe this is a picture of the launch of an Aster 15 by RSS Intrepid off the French port of Toulon during an exercise, on 3 April 2008. Photo credit to Meret Marine and the image is not related to CARAT 2009.

Above is CJ's short video clip of the RSS Formidable firing her OTO Melara (now OTO Breda) Super Rapido 76mm gun during a Singapore FLEETEX 2009 in the South China Sea. Video not related to CARAT 2009.

During the Singapore FLEETEX 2009, Boeing Defence Australia provided a complete maritime ScanEagle system for ship-based trials with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) on both the Endurance Class and Formidable Class vessels. The ScanEagle system includes a ground control station, communication links, launcher and SkyHook recovery system. A Boeing Insitu team deployed to Singapore for the entire trial. Photo of artist impression taken by KL Security Review at IMDEX 2009. Singapore Technologies Electronics (ST Electronics), unveiled a new high speed USV design dubbed Venus. The Venus USV (dimensions: 9m in length, 2.8m in width and 5m in height) will have an endurance of 8 hrs and be able to operate at speeds of up to 50 knots. The RSN is an operator of both the Protector USV and the Spartan USV. They have known for some time that both USVs designs have stability and sea keeping issues that sometimes leads to a loss of signal. As such, last year, the RSN awarded the Hawaiian based speed boat manufacturer, Navatek Ltd, two contracts to design a new Venus USV hulls. As you may know, Navatek Ltd designed the unique 'M' hulls of the 11-metre USVs designed for the USN's LCS vessels. It looks like both the USN and the RSN are looking at using a lot more of USVs in their concept of operations. See this DT thread for more information.
