Often, in the excitement of a service member’s transition from the military to the civilian world, the fears and needs of the spouse and family members are overlooked. However, the fact is that spouses and family members transition too.

The Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP) offers a wide variety of transition services not only to Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve Service Members, but also to their spouses and families. National Guard and Reserve personnel who have been mobilized for 180 continuous days are eligible, along with their family members, for full ACAP services. ACAP encourages families to take advantage of its services together. The support of all family members while transitioning is vital to a successful and minimum-stress transition.

ACAP services include:

a. Discussion of the changes one can expect after transition and how those changes affect the family. Knowing what to expect after transition minimizes stress during the transition process.

b. Spouses and family members may be looking to start a career after the military member transitions. ACAP provides a wide-range of job search assistance to include:

- Identifying skills and how they relate to occupations.
- Preparing resumes reflecting skills related to a desired occupation.
- Training on effective interview strategies.
- Identifying job opportunities in desired locations and occupations.

c. A two-day workshop designed to present an overview of the job search process.

d. Specialized workshops on job search issues and other issues of interest (i.e. financial planning).

e. On-going individualized counseling sessions with highly-qualified counselors.

f. Automated job search tools for self-directed transition activities.

g. A resource library of material related to job search and other transition issues.

h. Referral to other on and off post agencies that can assist during the transition process.

i. Periodic job fairs where transitioners and their families can personally meet perspective employers.

j. A comprehensive web site which includes multiple resources of information on job search and other transition issues.
