If paf is looking for immediately stopgap then Rafale is the only one that isn't blocked. But PAF should also consider EF2000, if they can fix the software glitch? :D
oh they would fix the SF glitch on the EF2000, but i would say just go for 40 Rafael and thats it, the rest can be JF-17 and J-10. plus if they go for Rafael. the French would be willing to help and provide Avionics subsystems and radar for JF-17 and J-10.

Guys hold your hoses it is too early to say something , as the president of pakistan is over with his visit of spain but nothing on the issue come to fore, so wait till we see the shipment reaching pakistan or pakis pilot going to sweden for early training , hope for the best till then sit back and think/pray that u get something good,
But gentlement , it is someting to notice as to why the south east asia is made to increase their militry mights, i mean see india is offered aircrafts from USA < and other militry equipment and like wise pakistan is also asked and given go ahead to increase on its militiry equipment , it stinks guys, i can bet it stinks,
i think the big bosses or upto something they have a deep planning for the region whr they wanna have a complete control over this region, i muct say the unexplored region as far as minerals are concern, we must think on these lines too, lets c , till so for i was happy that stabilitiy and peace is coming to region wth the arch rival involved in negotiation , but this is raising question our the greeen gardens of commonor e dreams, which expected some bounty and prosperaty coming his way, :?

Hah.... To hell with Sweden if they dont give us ACs then We have France and China always open. We will buy from them. Rafale is little expensive but the best. J10 also good. Pakistan should make a straitagy, buy some squaderens of Good expensive high tech ACs and some squadrens of cheaper average ACs.

So much for the JAS-39's. Their prime minister has said openly that they wont be selling any to Pakistan. I am glad cause i did'nt like the plane in the first place. What PAF needs is an equal or better fighter then indian SU-30's and if the price tag for Grippen is $45 Mil then HELL NO.

Objection from US over its GE F404 engines wont be a problem since we r a MNNA and another engine is also an option. That plane is puny and its main BVR is AIM-120 which i doubt US will approve. It currently has no air refulling capability, no AESA radar and very limited strike capability. It has only 7 hardpoints and can carry very little weight.

Most importantly the swedes have this policy of not supplies weapons or spares to any country involved in a conflict and thats when we would be needing the spares most. So that sucks...

Long Live F-35... :smokingc:

Move to replenish Pak air power

PAF gets air surveillance system; PIA to replace Fokkers with SAAB

By Kamran Khan

Karachi: Pakistan has taken a big leap to strengthen its fast depleting air power by securing a nod from Sweden to sell Islamabad an Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWE&CS), informed sources said.
This state-of-the-art system will also augment Pakistan Navy’s existing potential for maritime and tactical surveillance, the sources added. Close to final approval is Pakistan’s decision to acquire 14 SAAB 2000 aircraft from Sweden. Seven of these aircraft will be dedicated for the PAF’s AWE&CS while the remaining seven will be acquired by the PIA to replace its fleet of Fokker aircraft, which have already been grounded, the sources said.
Several Fokker-related incidents, including the last year’s crash that killed the then chief of air staff, air marshal Mushaf Ali Mir, and 17 other PAF officials, the PIA had decided last year to sell its fleet of 11 aircraft and replace them with compatible ones.

The seven SAAB 2000 that will replace the ageing Fokkers on the PIA’s heavily subsidised socio-economic routes will help the airline save about Rs 200 million on the subsidised routes that cost the PIA about Rs 400 million every year.

Because of the composite nature of the deal, the PIA would pay only $45 million for the seven SAAB aircraft as against the $98 million for the French ATR and $91 million for the American Dash-8 that will cost about $98 million.

For its part the Swedish government has provided a guarantee for the smooth supply of SAAB spare parts as long as the aircraft is flown anywhere in the world, the PIA sources confirmed. Six hundred of such planes are being flown all over the world.

The SAAB aircraft for the PAF will be equipped with ERIEYE AWE&C system which can manage airborne early warning; intercept communication; airspace management; surveillance and control borders; detect illegal shipment of weapons and drugs; and coordinate search and rescue operations. It will be two years before the PAF receives its first AWE&C system.

The deal would cost Pakistan about $1.7 billion (approximately Rs 90 billion) during the next five years, and it will constitute the biggest defence purchase by the Musharraf administration.

During his recently concluded visit to Sweden, President Pervez Musharraf is understood to have held extensive discussions with the Swedish leadership on Pakistan’s interest in the AWE&CS, sources familiar with the discussions in Sweden said. Sweden had earlier turned down Pakistan’s requests on the reasons ranging from democracy to child labour. Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sa’adat Kaleem will be visiting Sweden to further negotiate the deal later this month. The sources said the AWE&CS would not only help Pakistan to counter-balance the Indian acquisition of the Israeli Phalcon airborne surveillance system, it will boast the Pakistan Air Force’s and the Navy’s reaction capabilities by providing early and specific warnings.

In the Rs 7.6 trillion defence budget announced this week, the Indian government has earmarked the largest sum for country’s air force by committing to buy new combat aircraft, airborne warning and control systems and missiles during the current year.

"The AWE&CS from Sweden, F-7 from China, upgraded Mirages from France and fresh supplies of Mirage spare parts from Libya would help the PAF meet the air challenge from our arch rival," commented a retired PAF air marshal.

Pakistan had first shown interest in the purchase of AWE&CS from Sweden in 1995 when the then Pakistani prime minister, Benazir Bhutto, had visited Stockholm and had requested the then Swedish premier, Olf Palme, to approve the sale. "For nine years we have tried to secure these aircraft from SAAB/Erricson," said an official source.

While the PAF made a determined effort to induct the SAAB AWE&CS into its fleet, but in its process to replace the Fokkers, the PIA tested the SAAB 2000, fitted with engine from Allison/Rolls Royce ATR and Dash-8 fitted with engines from Pratt and Whitney.

With the PAF’s deal for SAAB-based AEW&C almost complete, it is now almost certain that the PIA would approve a strong internal recommendation for the SAAB 2000. "It makes more sense because the SAAB will be setting facility for the maintenance of the PAF’s SAAB 2000 in the country," said an official. "It’s much feasible, both financially as well as technically, to have a combined maintenance facility for the PAF’s and the PIA’s SAAB fleet."

Some minor specs.....

ERIEYE - Airborne Early Warning & Control System (AEW&C)

ERIEYE is the first high-performance, long-range Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) system based on active phased-array pulse-Doppler radar.

This new-generation system is capable of installation in a variety of commercial and military aircraft, including regional jet or turboprop airliners. It meets full AEW&C requirements for detecting and tracking targets at ranges of up to 450 km over land or water.

ERIEYE is a complete AEW&C system, including radar (with integrated SSR/IFF), electronic support measures, communications and data links, comprehensive command-and-control facilities and self-protection system.

The ERIEYE radar, with its fixed electronically scanned antenna and use of adaptive radar control techniques, has superior resolution accuracy. When compared to traditional rotodome-based solutions, it provides enhanced detection and tracking performance, including the active simultaneous tracking of multiple targets. In addition, the radar offers significantly improved resistance to electronic countermeasures (ECM).

State-of-the-art command-and-control system gives the on-board mission-system crew full capability for AEW&C roles as well as maximum flexibility for other peacetime and war missions. ERIEYE is fully interoperable with and easily integrated into NATO Air Defense Command Systems.

here is some information on the Platform itself. http://www.aerospace-technology.com/projects/saab_2000/

i think this 1.7 billion dollar is part of the bigger deal that hasn't been unveiled.

Re: PAF gets swede awacs

ERIEYE is Swedens! And this piece of news does 'not' sound like B.S. to me 'cuz the Swedish leadership declined to give Gripens to Pakistan but stopped short of commenting on the issue of Erieye as they hinted that Erieye was not considered a 'weapon'. :cop

Re: PAF gets swede awacs

Great news for us. This news report couldnt be wrong because Swedish foreign minister once said that Sweden will not be selling weapons to Pakistan but they will not consider AWACS as a weapon.

Earliar, PAF ACM stated that Pakistan will be purchasing FT-2000 anti-radiation missiles from China with ToT. Pakistan will not allow imbalence in South Asia and PAF will counter Phalcons with these missiles. This report regarding Swedish AWACS shows that PAF is aware of countering the Phalcon threat through similar AWACS. That doesnt mean that anti-radiation missiles to PAF are useless because PAF can get the capability to destroy enemy's AWACS radars.

These Erieye AWACS can also pay an active role in navy. India hasnt planned provide AWACS support to its navy. But as far as my personal opinion is concerned, Indian navy is a threat to PN which is armed with Stealth warships like talwar and P-17, and supersonic cruise missiles like Klub and Brahmos.

Re: PAF gets swede awacs

guys read the article again. the first one where Sweden said it wont sell weapons to pakistan. it was not the Foreign minister saying this it was the News media reporting and stating basic facts about there law.
politicians never say such things they always hide behind clouds of words, that gives them time to think over what they would end up deciding.

Can we merge this thread with the grippen +awac thread please webs this is too confuseing.
