Given their growing capabilities, especially indigenously, Vietnam warrants having their own discussion thread.

Information on their indigenous frigate was hinted two days ago. Reportedly a 4000 ton design. Significant Admiral Grigorovich (11346R) and Gepard influences paired with possibly local sensors such as the fixed PARs.

Project 11356R it self already 125m and 4000 ton range. So if Russia help Vietnam with license and tech transfer, it is plausible to build it in the end in Vietnam yard.

However their yard has not been able to build Project 11661 Corvette/Light Frigate domestically yet. From what I gather building more Project 11661 with tech transfer in Vietnam yards is the next priorities. Vietnam Navy already become main users for Project 11661 with two batches of two. Seems they want the next batch of two (Ship #5&6) to be build in Vietnam yard. This I suspect will also help to avoid export sanctions toward Russia due to the war.

Add:
I do suspect after completion of another batch of Project 11661 in their yard, then Vietnam yard then move toward project 11356R. Also both Project 11661 and 11356R design with Ukraine naval gas turbines. There're talks that Russia Import Substitution design is fitted for newer design. If that's true then it is reasonable to see Russia going to sell the design to export market, and let the customer deal with Motorsich to source engines just like India done.

Vietnam online forum claim that the radar and missiles are indegenous development from Viettel. Alltough several record also shown the indigenous missiles mostly license development from Russia ones. Will see which missiles it is based on.

The design follow shilouete of Gregorovich Frigate class, the way I see it.

Admiral-Grigorovich-class-frigate.jpg

However more modern fixed panel radar mast, which has semblance with Gorshkov class.

Either way it is clear has much Russian design influences. Myanmar Frigate clearly influences by China design, while Vietnam Frigate more from Russia. Whether Russia involve on design and licensing remain to be seen. Altough I see for some time Vietnam media and online forums mostly addamant any new design is pure indigenous.
