Oz pollies are our main problem. Utter fountains of codswallop but are extremely tight where money is concerned. Put it off till the other mob are in power & then yell at them for not constructing ships locally.

Have always thought that there should be a greater partnership between the Canadians & ourselves. Common designs & locally built.

But it will never happen. The current mob are too busy demonising our education & health systems whilst looking after their 'mates'.:(
Politicians, what can I say! At least your Canberra class hulls were built in Spain and finished off in OZ. In Canada, this would never have happened...there would be a never ending debate on which province should build them in Canada, despite the fact there are no capable shipyards in any province! As for joint OZ-CDN partnership, I think you would be better off going alone based on our recent defence procurement history.

Oz is currently building 3 Air Warfare Destroyers. Assembly is being undertaken in South Australia with 'blocks' being built in other States. It keeps all the 'pollies' happy.

The proposed new submarine (Son of Collins?) will also be assembled in SA with inputs from throughout Australia. Recall that the Canadians had a team assisting with the original deign. The intent, from an Oz viewpoint, was to design a very capable vessel with construction taking place in Canada as well.

The Collins Class has turned out to be a highly capable submarine with the exception of the diesels which were a wrong choice.

Good to see her moving although she doesn't seem to be moving at the moment. Probably has a lot of system and operation checks to get done before heading out into the deep sea.
She'll be crawling with BAE staff for Sea Trials which should take at least all of today. Includes such things as anchor weighing. sea boat cranes, dock flooding etc much of which done underway but not making way plus plenty more.
She'll have to do a full power trial and maneuvering trial at speed, full ahead to full astern etc but not sure if the Bay is deep enough for that?

Bugger was down there on Sunday, would have loved to see her out and about. Guess I will have to wait until she is in Sydney.

Good to hear the big ship up and moving. One ship project with seemingly not to many dramas.

Anyone know when she is due in Sydney?
I will be taking some photos on that day
All going to plan, under 2 weeks. She'll be there for some time too as she goes into dry-dock for a complete final paint from top to toe including flight deck. BAE are so committed to keeping work going, they are flying in a load of staff and engineers to keep work ongoing while she is away, before getting her back into Williamstown.

Is Canberra still in the bay? I have tried to find her on the cams but she doesn't seem to pop up anywhere.

Try this link to the bay webcams specifically the one located at Fawkner Beacon. If you can get control of the webcam and pan extreme left you can zoom in on her. I have been keeping an eye on her and she hasn't moved much at all today.

A question about the final fit-out for Canberra and Adelaide.

The Canberra, and I presume Adelaide, will go into dry-dock for a hull clean and final painting. At any stage, will the deck be treated, or modified to cater for possible cross decking by Marine Corps and RN F-35s.

The US Navy is putting considerable effort into preparing the decks of amphib vessels to take the heat load of the F 35s. Not seen as necessary for our big boats?
