Russian fighters for the USAF/USN?
The ultimate irony …
In this wonderful piece of aeronautical and political irony, it seems that our newfound but uneasy friends, the Russians, may be our best source of new fighter aircraft. Bob Kress, ex-Grumman VP of advanced programs and chief engineer on the F-14, and Adm. Paul Gillcrist, retired USN fighter pilot, make a convincing argument that rather than spend ridiculous sums for new fighters that will probably show up too late to do us any good, we should buy Sukhoi Su-27 airframes and "Americanize" them with our engines and flight-control systems. Controversial? Absolutely! Logical? Make your own decision.

basic reason for all this: End of cold war
Nor F-14 Nor A-16 or A-12 will never be cancelled had if Soviet Union did not collapse. I was interested to read about negative effects of collapse of Soviet on US Military as well as Europeans.
F-14 which had to challenge Soviet Maritime Bombers attacking US Carriers ended up in Escorting them in Afghanistan conflict 2001.
F-14 should have been there for some more time :( , Retiring F-14 only made its fans to criticize Super Hornet more and more. of all teen series Hornet is the most criticized.
I heard even Germans had to struggle in their parliament to get Typhoons

considering that the US has bought a full squadron of Mig 29's in the past - and has a couple of Su-27's for RedAir eval - then I'm not so sure that this article (which has been flogged to death in the past on various forums) is worth flogging again.

This is really another variation on the Sparks/Meyers/Riccioni contribution to military platforms debate....
