China working on 'Super-10' advanced fighter

China is developing an advanced version of the Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Corporation (CAC) J-10 multirole fighter aircraft, referred to as the Super-10, with a more powerful engine, thrust-vector control, stronger airframe and passive phased-array radar, according to Russian sources.

Will feature- Passive PAR, TVC, Strengthened Airframe, Russian help. The J-10 was originally designed to use the Zhemchug, a mechanically scanned slotted array by Phazotron, but some critical components were made impossible to copy.

The other Bureau, Tikhomirov, recently resumed a working relationship with the PLAAF, after having submitted an early prototype of their Pero in the late 90s but with no followup by the Chinese. They are now submitting a derivative of the Pero (is this the Panda?). The Pero was originally designed for use on the Su-30KN.

Recall the recent large order for engines in late 2005. Most observers assumed it was for more of the AL-31FN, but this is not so. It was for a new engine, the AL-31FN-M1. The M1 features an enlarged fan with inlet diameter of 924 mm instead of 902 mm, which improved thrust from 122.6kN to 132.4 kN. Also features a swivel nozzle developed by Salyut in conjunction with Zavod imeni Klimova. Similar to the KliVT used on the RD-33OVT of the Mig-29OVT- it's improved over the IAF's Su-30MKI in that it deflects in BOTH pitch and yaw, rather than pitch only.

PAF refers to more advance version of J-10 as FC-20. Not much details are out their yet but we can assume the newer version to be something like the pictures. We know Mig is assisting the project so China's intention might be to make it as par to Mig-35... PAF plan is to acquire 36-100 FC-20.. my guess is the first median flight is in 2009?

Generally thats old news. The panel of experts seems to agree that the Super 10 name is coined by Russia, not China. The sales of new engine is design to boost russian export and might not benefit China at all. China is increasingly relying on domestic parts and would call a newer version of the J-10 as J-10C not Super 10.

Pakistani version of upgraded J-10 with Chinese engine WS-10A will be called FC-20 already acknowledged in an interview with PAF's CAS ACM Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed dated 2007.

Based on the reuters reported by TPhuang that in excercises, one J10 loss was reported for the loss of 10 SU-30MKKs, it is safe to assume that FC-20s when inducted in PAF are going to be better/equal to MKIs.

PAF only said 32 to 36 FC-20s not 36 to 100 FC-20s. Lets not make things speculative.

No its not safe to make assumptions, at least not right now when much of the J-10B remains ambiguous on part of China. & on part of PAF FC-20 also remains ambiguous - we don't know if PAF will go for completely Chinese aircraft are equip it with Western technology (as it usually does) or go for the mix. In any case we don't know the capability PAF's aircraft will have - or for that matter the PLAAF's.

2ndly; the exercise was done on PLAAF v/s PLAAF basis. There should be a neutral opponent in the exercise to judge its credibility. How do we know Su-30MKK pilots did not give away the fight to send signal accross to some countries that China is capable of making highly advance fighters capable of challanging front line fighters of their own?

3rdly; Su-30MKK and Su-30MKI are different aircrafts in terms of avionics and also in some weapon systems.

J-10B/FC-20 is not J-XX. J-10B is improvement over current J-10 aircrafts while J-XX now J-13 or J-14 is PLAAF's next generation aircraft & its more of a 4.5/5th generation aircraft. J-10B is 4th generation.

After the initial feeling of celebration in China when J-10 was introduced into service more than 4 years ago worn off, PLAAF realized the plane did not live up to expectation in many ways. The J-10B program was launched somewhere around two years ago to deal with some of the shortcomings. Several propaganda articles from CAC itself have revealed some bits and pieces of information about it, but nothing that paints a complete picture. I think it would be reasonable to expect new radar, avionics, composites....etc, the usual stuff.

I wasn't say that. It's still the best fighter China has at the moment, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be upgrading it. My feeling is that the change in J-10B with not be as revolutionary as many of us originally hoped for (at least from the outside).

Pakistani F-10s are going to be the modified and upgraded J-10s.

Pakistani pilots test flew the J-10s. They loved it but they requested for certain modifications and upgrades.

Too many rumors on what kind of upgrades were requested. Untill they are out, hold your horses.

Even then, I highly doubt if the exact details would be made avaialble.
