RMN to receive Fennec copters soon
LUMUT May 25 - The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) will officially take delivery of six French-made Fennec helicopters by the end of the month or early next month to strengthen its fleet.
Its Fleet Commander, Laksamana Madya Datuk Ramlan Mohamed Ali said all six helicopters were already at Lumut RMN base since two months ago but were still undergoing testing and RMN pilots were training on flying them.
He said all helicopters were operating satisfactorily and would be used as "lead in" in RMN trainings.
"Currently, our pilots have the opportunity to fly these Fennec helicopters with help from the workers of its manufacturing company, Eurocopter, that also has a base in Malaysia.
"Eurocopter is now in the process of servicing the helicopters to suit our pilots before the full official handover to us," he told reporters after the Farewell Ceremonial Parade for the Fleet Commander at KD Pelandok at RMN Base here on Tuesday.
Following the parade, the Handover of Duty of the Fleet Commander from Ramlan to Laksamana Madya Datuk Mohammad Nik was witnessed by Navy Chief Laksamana Datuk Seri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor at the fleet headquarters.
Ramlan, who had been Fleet Commander for the past nine months, was appointed the Chief of Staff at the Malaysian Armed Forces Headquarters (MATM) effective Monday.
He said the Eurocopter workers would provide training and guidance to RMN pilots so that they could efficiently carry out their operations with the helicopters.
Meanwhile, Ramlan expressed his satisfaction with the changes brought about during his tenure as RMN Fleet Commander especially in terms of RMN's assets such as the Super Lynx helicopters received last year and the Fennec.
"Besides that, we are planning to launch two new ships, that is the Kedah ship which had been named and the Pahang ship which would be officially named soon. We had also decommissioned two ships, namely KD Rahmat and KD Serampang that are way past their prime," he said.
