July 25, 2004: Bell Helicopter said Thursday that it began shipping the first of 26 Bell 412EP twin-engine helicopters to Pakistan last month in a deal worth $230 million. Nine of the medium-size utility choppers were delivered last month "in support of the war on terrorism," a Bell statement said. But the Fort Worth-based unit of Textron declined to say what government department in the military-controlled South Asian country would operate the aircraft. However defence circles state that about twenty of these helicopters would be directly used by Pakistan Army and the rest by paramilitary and law enforcement agencies.

The 412EP is designed primarily for personnel transport, rapid deployment, emergency medical service and disaster relief. Britain's Defence Helicopter Flying School uses them for training, and Canadian forces fly them for search-and-rescue operations and medical evacuation. Bell spokesman Bob Leder said the utility aircraft can carry 17 people, including the pilot. The aircraft operates well at high altitude and in extremely hot weather, he said.

It's a great bird! Pakistan should get some very good reliable service from these.
