In response to an immediate operational requirement of the German Bundeswehr, Rheinmetall Landsysteme is supplying the German military with additional DURO 3 multipurpose vehicles, earmarked for deployment in foreign trouble spots.

Along with the 12 vehicles ordered in December 2002 and configured for a Mobile Medical Team (MMT) version, a further four vehicles (modified for military police operations) are now in production following the award of a new contract in July 2003.

Manufactured under an exclusive cooperation agreement with the Swiss company MOWAG, the DURO 3 is a state-of-the-art 6x6 multipurpose wheeled armoured vehicle. As such, it complements the existing family of non-armoured DURO vehicles, more than 3,500 of which are now in successful service with the Swiss Army.

In the German Bundeswehr, the DURO 3 is intended to replace existing support vehicles in this domain, and will thus make a major contribution to improving the protection afforded to German troops in the field. In coming years, the Bundeswehr?s total requirement for armoured transport vehicles for medical, military police, observation and reconnaissance, command, EOD and communication applications, etc., is estimated to come to exceed 900 vehicles for all services of the Bundeswehr.

In light of this situation, the DURO 3, manufactured and assembled at Rheinmetall?s Kassel plant and currently reaching the troops in the field, represents a contract with great future potential. Thus, the company continues to expand its globally acknowledged role as competent developer and manufacturer of high quality, highly innovative wheeled armoured vehicles.

Rheinmetall Landsysteme?s version of the DURO 3 features a degree of crew protection never before attained in a vehicle in its class. The vehicle affords its 2+12 crewmembers excellent protection against ballistic threats up to and including STANAG 4569 Level 2 and DIN EN 1522 Level FB7. Furthermore, it is equipped with anti-landmine protection in accordance with STANAG 4569 Level 1, as well as two separately integrated NBC protection systems ? one for the driver?s cab and one for the multipurpose module.

Another outstanding characteristic of the DURO 3 is its modularity. A vast variety of user-specific mission modules can be mounted on the uniform chassis. Moreover, these modules can function independently when detached from the vehicle ? an enormous advantageous in terms of flexibility and logistical support.

The DURO 3 offers a generous 16 m3 of useful space, and ? depending on the specific version ? has a useful load carrying capacity of up to 5.5 tons. Finally, because it only weighs about 12 tons, it can be transported in aircraft like the C-130 Hercules, C-160 Transall and A 400M.
