ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is building its second military/air force transport base at Masroor near Karachi to house multi-role C-130’s planes and authorities concerned are engaged day and night to complete it before December this year.

Well-placed defence sources told The News here that the base is being developed with assistance of the United States that will provide Pakistan the latest version of the C-130 planes. The planes are being supplied under an agreement, signed by both the countries last year when Pakistan’s defence secretary Lt. General Hamid Nawaz Khan visited the United States.

The sources said that supply of the planes would start in last month of this year. At least six planes will become part of the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) transport fleet within next year. With this the PAF fleet would close to double of the existing strength. The PAF had 12 C-130 in the beginning but four planes were destroyed in the process of their operations while one was damaged and still not in service.

The C-130 is the largest in number of the planes in one single configuration in use world over as 1530 planes of such category are being used by the different air forces. Till now Chaklala was the only transport base the PAF had and in case of any eventuality if the Chaklala renders inoperative, the whole transport is ceased. For the reason the PAF has decided to establish another base, the sources added.

The Masroor air base, previously known as Mauri Pur air base, is considered to be the forward base for provision of assistance for the naval operations. It is among the largest bases of Southern Air Command that used to have bomber planes. It was named after a valiant fighter pilot Masroor, who sacrificed his life in an operation in 1971 war with India.

The base will have hangers for the wide body planes and its airstrip will also be strengthened and expanded further, the sources said.

This news article makes little sense to me. First of all what is this latest version of C-130 ? I mean PAF has already ordered some old C-130K's and this article dosnt mention the J model specifically.

Also the Masroor base's runway is long enough to land a C-130, not to mention the C-130 requires a shorter runway then a ordinary fighter so whats up with this NEW base for Hercules ????

Isnt the fact is that we r setting up a 2nd logistic base at masoor to support C-130 operations ? I believe the article missed the main point which is that Masroor from now on will be able to support the C-130's fully.

Hey regarding the number the air force posses, i think paf was left with only two in her fleet, and was realyfacing problem in maint hte others due to the sanctions imposed by the USA previously , do we have any such agreement that in future such types of sanctions wont effect the supply of spares for the existing USA eqpt in PAF< :?
