The most powerful ballistic long range missile developed by India, Agni-III (Fire), will be ready for its first test soon, a top defence scientist said Thursday.
V.K. Atre, chief of Defence Research and Development Organistan (DRDO) and advisor to the Defence Minister, said the date of launch would be decided soon.
"It's in the final phase of integration. Various sub-systems of Agni III are ready, when we put together, then we will launch it. It's much more than just technology. As I said about the date it would not be proper for me to indicate the time when it's going to be launched," Atre told reporters here.
Agni-III, an intermediate range ballistic missile, has a range of 3000 kilometers. This would allow it to strike targets deep within China. The first test-flight of Agni-III, a variant of the Agni-II, with a range of 700 km was succesfully conducted on January 25, 2002.
The Agni ballistic missile programme began in the 1980s and the first successful firing of an Agni I, with a two-stage, solid-liquid propulsion system, was in 1989.
