Army in internal security roles
Army in a democracy is of, by and for the people of the democracy. However, insurgency can cause a major problem because no stark distinction can be readily made between the victims (general public) and the perpetrators of crime and insurgency (terrorists and organised criminals). The army then has to fight an asymmetric war where its own people might get caught in the crossfire. This can be damaging to not only the army's image in the eyes of the public but also to soldiers on whom it can take a psychological toll. However army might be the last organisation in the entire nation capable of dealing with such a situation.
