Indonesia: 'green water navy'

Here's hoping... anyone know the depth of the water they're on? If it's North of Bali, then it shouldn't be too deep right?

Bali sea adjacent to Java sea, and most of them is not that deep (average below 100 m). However some media reporting there's 700 m trench in the area. Hope for the best.

Selat Bali (Bali Strait) has an average depth of 60 m, but the Selat Lombok is on many places deeper than 250 m.

(I hate reading Kompas, the amount of popping up and total covering advertisements is ridiculous)

Jane’s has also reported it too. Like you, I also hope the best for the sake of the crew of KRI Nanggala (402).

KRI Nanggala was deemed to be in distress after missing a scheduled reporting call with the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) at about 03:00 local time on 21 April 2021. Subsequently, the TNI-AL sent out a distress call to the International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office (ISMERLO) at about 09:37 to report the boat as missing, with the presumption that it has sunk.

I hope Indonesia will also activate the 2012 framework of submarine rescue support and cooperation between the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the TNI AL — I am sure the crew of MV Swift Rescue and other standby assets of the RSN are waiting for the call from our Defence Minister, once they are activated by Indonesia.

A couple of hours ago MV Swift Rescue already left harbour, at this moment it has a north-east course, but i expect, it will turn soon for a south-east course.

MV Swift Rescue underway to Indonesia to help locate KRI Nanggala. The Indonesian Government and the TNI AL should be lauded for its swift and decisive approach in seeking foreign assistance. Submarine rescue arrangements with both Australia and Singapore are activated. God speed.

By 18:00 Jakarta time, their (TNI-AL) announcement in media seems already prepared for the worst. They already send KRI Spica one of the new French build Hydrography OCEA class. They have abilities to comb sea floor. They know it's racing with time.

Yes they will send both the KRI Rigel 933 and KRI Spica 934.

I really hope they are all safe, but looking to the submarine disasters of the Russian Kursk in August 2000 and Argentine Navy ARA San Juan in 2017, i am afraid for the worst.

I hope that the crew are safe and well. But time will tell. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and the Navy.

The coordinates are found. Two other submarines are sent to these coordinates to join the SAR-operation.

So, they think they know more or less the place of the accident, but they haven't found KRI Nanggala 402 yet.

Giving this announcement 24 hours after the navy and BASARNAS already doing this is obviously an act of a politician who wants attention.

Well there's tons of useless Politicians within Indonesian Political circles, especially in the Parliament. We can see they're going to used any incidents to gain attention showing they're doing something.

They'll use their 'suporters' within online media or Local Media showing sympathy first then try to 'capitalise' their agenda. But hey, that's what Politicians do all over the world .

Whatever the results of this incident, I'm already see the blame gaming will begin. Subtlety first, then sensing the mood in public, they will launch the attack.

I already see some certain media try to build opinion on the age of KRI Nanggala. Well looking only that factor, it's an old Submarine if doesn't count that it has thorough modifications in 2012 that should make her operational until end of this decade. However there are opinion building effort that are going only to focus there, and omitting refurbishment and modifications job in 2012. Again that's how Politicians work, try to find gain in any misfortune.

I'm not supporters on current administration, my post already shown this. I'm especially critical the way they're handling Defense development so far. However picturing as this Submarine as old rickety boat ? Come on, we still don't know what's really happen, and that Submarine so far shown good condition and just recently doing patrol in Natuna area (we have seen photos in media of Nanggala working together with Alugoro in that area).

I am afraid it is a hoax-newsreport, a pure lie just to get likes and attention.
After all these hours there is no newsreport from a reliable source or an official TNI-AL announcement confirming this.

The navy will prepare for every situation, in case survivors will be found. But also now nothing similar with the Twitter-rumour.

It seems that KRI R.E. Martadinata 331 detected something at a depth of 600-700 meters with a speed of 2,5 kts for a short moment. But it is unclear what kind of object this is, so they also can not confirm if this is a submarine or something else. Because of this it is very clear now that there was no communication with the KRI Nanggala 402.

From which i understand depths of 600-700 meters are unreachable for most submarines, so also the Type 209, but for many sea creatures like potvissen/Physeter macrocephalus, reaching such depths is nothing special.

It is too early for any speculations, let alone conclusions about the cause of this disaster, but looking to the circumstances described in the official statements, it is quite likely that something went wrong with one of the torpedoes on board.

On a totally unrelated topic,

I wasn't aware that we're procuring old USCG vessel until I come across that news. Is there more info about this? The boat is USCGC Adak.

I also never heard about transferring one or more Island-class patrol boat or any other USCG-vessel to Indonesia.
Looking to this
it is a very active boat, with a lot of history, and it is understandable that many people oppose a transfer to abroad.

Updates on the search for KRI Nanggala

1. KRI Nanggala is the second of two Type 209 submarines built in Germany and commissioned into service in 1981 as the Cakra class. It completed a refit in Korea in 2012. The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) operates a total of five submarines, with the remaining three being improved Jang Bogo-class boats from Korea. The last of the three was built locally in Indonesia and commissioned in March 2021.

2. Unconfirmed reports on twitter suggest that the distressed submarine has been found. Speed matters, when a glimmer of hope emerges — not sure if KRI Nanggala (according to unconfirmed reports), is moving at a slow speed due to an electrical problem — even if it found, not sure if it is at a depth where rescue can be attempted, yet.

3. In its “Interim Analysis” published in the internal report, the Indonesian Navy speculated that a possible blackout occurred on the KRI Nanggala-402 which made it impossible to control the vessel or invoke emergency procedures for the submarine to resurface. I pray for a timely rescue and recovery led by the TNI AL; with help from the Australians, Americans, Malaysians and Singaporeans (on the MV Swift Rescue — that allows the transfer under pressure of crew members from a disabled submarine to hyperbaric chambers on a surface ship). Indonesia’s military spokesman MG Achmad Riad said on 22 Apr 2021 (Thurs) morning that Singapore is sending MV Swift Rescue.

4. “Swift Rescue is estimated to arrive on location on Apr 24 [Sat],” MG Achmad Riad said in a statement. Malaysia's Mega Bakti, meanwhile, is expected to arrive after 4pm on 25 Apr 2021 (Sun) or latest by 26 Apr 2021 (Mon).

In a Facebook post quoted above (from an hour ago), Singapore's defence minister Dr Ng Eng Hen said its submarine rescue vessel was "dispatched expeditiously yesterday afternoon, as fast as she could get ready", after its navy chief received a request for assistance from his Indonesian counterpart. "A medical team was also added to the regular crew in the event that hyperbaric care would be needed," said Dr Ng.

6. Indonesia's navy is searching for the submarine that went missing north of the resort island of Bali, the military said. The submarine was carrying 53 personnel on board for the exercise, which TNI AL ships were taking part in, namely the frigates KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata(331) and KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai (332) and the corvette KRI Diponegoro (365).

7. Discovery of the location of the distressed submarine is not officially confirmed by the TNI AL. There is as yet no news on progress of the rescue attempts to come; and situation may still change. We will need to see an updated official announcement on KRI Nanggala — before attempting further comment.

From last official press conference, TNI told that all news in Twitter related to contacts and locations still can't be officially confirm. This's just add on no official confirmation can be given yet.

In press conference one thing that they can confirm that the last communication with Submarine is when they want to flooded torpedo tubes #8. Means they're in preparation for torpedo launching procedure.
