US Navy News and updates

This article points out the difficulties of sustaining nuclear power for the USN due to the decline of the commercial nuclear reactor business. Not sure I buy into this. As long as the USN maintains a continuous build of nuclear subs and CVNs the prime suppliers should stay in business. The Western commercial nuclear business has been comatose for a decade now but new emerging technologies may make the commercial market viable again.

A sobering article. One can only hope that the war planners prioritize neutralizing as much of the threat at the start of the conflict but it takes a lot of guts to sail into hostile waters under those conditions.

‘You’re on your own’: US sealift can’t count on US Navy escorts in the next big war

Military Sealift Command is focusing more on operating inside contested waters, said Tom Van Leunen, the command’s spokesman...

As part of those efforts, the command has developed a basic and advanced operations course for its mariners and has been participating in more fleet exercises, he said.

Mewborne’s efforts on “mariner resiliency” have been setting the right tone, Buzby said. The effort focuses on containing electronic emissions, becoming physically fit to be able to combat damage over long periods and a sobering reminder at the end, he added.

“The last bullet point on one of the slides is ‘Learn how to swim,’” he said. “It’s to that point. There’s not going to be a bunch of destroyers around us as we take those ships over there. We’re going to be hitting the sea buoy, cranking it up and going hell-bent for leather, hoping to stay undetected.”

The frontal part looked like a Udoloy/Sovremennyy but if I'm not mistaken both classes don't have an RBU [in red Storm Rising the US sub in Russian waters was damaged by RBUs fired from a Grisha] up front.

In the movie, the ship's sonar console was in the bridge. Shouldn't it have been in the CIC? Also, one of the SEALs was carrying a standard 1 quart plastic canteen. In a real life scenario wouldn't SEALs be using something like a Camelback?

Worth watching, specially for me as I get in free. According to the press releases the US Navy actually provided the producers a set of blueprints for the Virginia Class, suitably scrubbed of course.

The US Navy is reportedly revamping it's training curriculum for countering the threat from Russian and Chinese subs by establishing a TopGun-style aggresor horce to train it's SSN crews. Can the movie be far behind? Lol...

World War 3: US Navy create aggressor squadron to ATTACK China and Russia

The admiral compared the plan for the submarine forces to create an advanced training regimen for attack submarine crews similar to the Navy’s Topgun program for fighter pilots.

Mr Richards wants a submarine aggressor squadron made up of active duty and reserve sailors and civilians for other Navy submariners to train against...

Typically poorly written and researched, and confused article by the Express, which singularly seems to not understand the role of an “aggressor” squadron, and doesn’t seem to understand the differences between submarines and aircraft in a tactical sense.

The first minute of the video at the link is what Admiral Richards actually said without the journalistic spin.
The second few minutes are just photo ops of various boats.
What he said makes perfect sense and simply redirects training away from the torpor of normal peacetime ops to greater combat readiness.

I'm not sure about LRASM; didn't LM decline to bid for the FFG because the missile's advanced capabilities and higher cost weren't competitive with the Navy's specs which seemed to favor NSM?
Yep they did, but doesn't mean that it can't / won't go on the DDG's etc., and foreign FFG / DDGs, as well as airborne assets.

With recent reports of the Chinese navy calling for US navy ships to be stopped and rammed in it's waters. Would the US navy be able to respond with force as this is a deliberate act.

All these FON ex will always have a contingency plan to them but its not like some precedents have not occurred in the past in respects to the USSR ramming USN assets in the cold war.

As for hawkish comments it can come from both sides, remember the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson calling for a blockade way back when, id imagine there would be numerous comments from inside the pentagon on the subject.

Not really a ramming just a stupid stunt that went wrong, when the bow swung in interaction pulled it around and then they took the power off and they bounced down the side. Just as well they did not do this near the bow or it would have be very bloody ugly.

It's not the PLAN per se calling for that. It is one officer within it. However, that fact that it is being reported by the mouthpiece of the CCP does give it some credence, because the PLA, PLAN & PLAAF do not belong to the Peoples Republic of China but to the CCP. As far as what the USN reaction would be, they would act in self defence and if a PLAN ship attempted to or stopped or rammed a USN ship that is an act or war and would give the US casus belli and the legal and moral high ground.
