Russian Air Force News & Discussion

Both efforts cost a lot of money which Russia doesn’t have an abundance of at the moment. India has been an important export market and it appears this won’t be the case for their 5th jets. China could provide the cash but would likely want too much transferring of technology which could come back to haunt Russia in the decades to come.

Su-57 is still raw. It probably has higher maintenance costs due to low-observability surface coatings, maybe even requires hangars. Its intended engine is still in development and testing.

1. Engine still not finished
2. More expensive to make
3. More expensive to maintain and operate

Buying 12 of them with transit engines right now makes sense and allows to develop tactics specific to the plane, as well as keep testing and perfecting other systems prior to mass production. Also, mass-production is not yet critical since, according to the official's statement, Su-30s and Su-35s are more than adequate for the tasks at hand. In addition, other important projects require funds right now. So no rush, not ready, not critical, not the most optimal use of resources.

Makes sense. I'm just trying to figure out whether this simply represents a delay to the fielding of the aircraft or if it is in fact dead in the water. Doesn't sound promising.

It’s certsinly been interesting to Watch the PAK-50/SU57 saga. Proje Ted purchase numbers steadily decreased, then INDIA withdrew. Makes one wonder, like Todjeager alluded to, ifmthere are more tech issues to be resolved than the Propoganda machine is willing to admit.

Well they signed a contract for the first batch, and apparently used two aircraft in Syria. They will likely go ahead with the signed serial contract for the first 12 aircraft squadron, and it will undoubtedly have problems (even the much simpler Su-34 had plenty going into service) but it's only a matter of time until they work out the issues.

EDIT: Two news on Russian UAV development. The Forpost-M with strike capabilities is approaching production readiness, with a Forpost-M2 in the works. Allegedly the Forpost-M was tested in Syria. This highlights continued development of the Israeli Searcher in Russia, with likely Israeli participation. Additionally a photo surfaced of Russia's domestic Orion UAV with munitions under the fuselage.

The Tu-22M3M, a modification of the Russian supersonic strike bomber, is a new modern plane inside a classic shell, the manufacturer says. Having greater speed and range, it will reportedly be armed with hypersonic missiles.
“It’s a principally new plane inside – with completely new systems, completely new capabilities, might and threat to potential adversaries,” Yuri Slyusar, the head of the United Aircraft Corporation, told reporters on Thursday, as the new version of the bomber was rolled out from the plant in the southwestern city of Kazan.

They said that they are planning to modernize up to 30 such bombers by 2020. From which i understand, the Russian Air Force has around 69 Tu-22M, so that means more than 35% of their fleet should be upgraded by that time. 30 in less than 1,5 years.....thats quite a lot.

Why didn't they go with upgrading the Tu-160 Blackjack or is this a way of increasing strategic bomber numbers?

According to several sources like this one First Tu-160M2 takes flight, production contract for ten aircraft signed - Blog - Russian strategic nuclear forces , the upgrading of the existing 16 Tu-160 to Tu-160M2 is in progress. Besides that 10 brandnew Tu-160s are on order.

Please correct me if i'm wrong, maybe there are recently some changes in the upgrades and acquisitions of the Tu-160.

Thanks for that, so it looks like that they could be increasing the size of their strategic bomber fleet.

It is not clear how the UAV was detected. Was it by radar or visually by groundtroops?

The Russian military has put its new fifth-gen air superiority fighter through rigorous testing, including combat evaluation in Syria against terrorist targets, but engineers finally seem to have found a way to separate the plane's composite wing from the rest of its airframe.

Several things. The military index with the letter E at the end, means Export in this case. So the Orion-E is by definition meant for export only. The domestic version would be called just Orion, or Orion-S, or after upgrades the Orion-M. Case in point, the domestic Iskander missile complex is called the Iskander-M, the export version Iskander-E. Also, this is a prototype aircraft in trials. It has not been fielded by the Russian military. So currently the Russian armed forces are definitely NOT operating it. This doesn't mean they won't in the near future, or that they don't want it. Then again, there is a far along project of Russifying and upgrading the Israeli Searcher Mk 2 under it's Russian name. The Forpost-M and Forpost-M2 are both being developed, at least one of them with strike capabilities. It's possible that Russia will go for the proven foreign platform (assuming it can be suitable localized), rather then risk on a domestic newcomer. Israel has proven itself to be awfully reliable, continuing to supply Russia with the type, and participate in development of follow-on models in Russia, despite sanctions, and their questionable use in Ukraine.

Anyone else read these reports? That’s three aircraft lost within a week. The TU22 crashed landed and broke apart trying to land in a blizzard.

$hit happens sometimes and US military aviation have not been having a good record recently either. It's the old adage about the military - if you can't take a joke you shouldn't have joined. I'm not being blase about it, just being realistic. Military aviation and military life in general isn't for those who don't have a sense of adventure and consider their personal safety and welfare as being paramount above all else.
