The $100m seems very low as the two RNZN ships where in excess of $1.3B for both and they were less well equipped than the RAN ships and even the Phalanx's came off the Leander's. They were 1990,s ships and inflation was still significant at that time. Possibly a zero missing? I am only guessing.
I think Volk means for the vessels basic hull and machinery without further systems. What I do remember was that a third vessel for the RNZN to replace F421 was to come in at about NZ$350m iirc. The $1.3B for the RNZN ships should also been seen through the lens of generating around $800m in local NZ industrial activity through out the project.

Checked back into it cause we have discussed the HMAS Perth cost in the past, The final vessel came in at $144.8 million in 1988 dollars, converted for inflation to current levels and it is $316.32m in 2016 dollars and to my knowledge that is for the complete ship fitted out ready to go.

Yes that seems about right, I remember that $750m was put away for a future frigate/frigates in the mid 90's. unfortunately the following government brought a pile of junk later with some of it.

Been busy with work in the last month or so, so a Happy New Year to all the posters here.

Lockheed Martin Updates Chilean Frigates - Mönch Verlagsgesellschaft mbH

For what its worth, a German defence website is reporting that Chile has opted for the refurbishment offer from LockMart Canada, including SeaCeptor, to upgrade their three ex-RN Type 23s.

Good news (in a minor way) for NZ if confirmed, as it expands the user base for both SeaCeptor and the combat management system our ANZACs will be getting.

Navy welcomes first sailor with moko - Samoa Planet

Interesting new look for one NZ sailor.

Will have to remain on his best behavior, as he won't be hard to pick put of a line-up!
BZ Roger. Best branch in the Navy too, not that I'm biased. Be good to see more men wearing the ta moko and the women wearing theirs.

For those who don't know the significance of a moko, it describes who you are and where you come from. Not where you come from in a geographical sense but who your family (whanau), sub tribe / extended family group (hapu) tribe (iwi) and your ancestors (tipuna / tupuna) are and your rank / status within the iwi. The ta moko is something earned.

We have always been allowed to grow scurs (beards) and have always had to apply for permission to do so. The official term is: "Request to cease shaving" and you have to march before your CO as a requestman to obtain permission. Conversely if you wanted to shave said scurs off you had to also obtain permission the same way. 40 years ago if you were under the age of 20 you had to request COs permission to marry. That was across all 3 services.

Interesting how much mileage some of these traditions have had. I had to get the COs permission to get married, not that long ago, while serving in the UK. Probably wouldn't have still been an issue in NZ I expect.

I thought tatoos were a tradition in the armed forces, would it be because its a facial tatoo that would require special consent? Looks impressive, not intimidating to me.

Very interesting. It is slightly smaller than what some of the Korean sites were speculating last year but again bigger than the FFX-II Daegu Class.
That's why I thought it's make a good corvette sans the ABM gear. Bit small for a modern day frigate but if you changed out the 5 in gun for a 76mm and changed the ABM radars for something less it would make an ideal OPV replacement, or as a corvette capability between OPVs and frigates.

In a way that is exactly what the 2800 tonne FFX-II Daegu is and even that keeps the big 5er up front. The Batch III has a 15m beam which is wider than the Perry's and around the same length as the OHP Batch one. I guess the possibility is there to have a long hull variant per the Perry's viz a FFX-IIIa? These new builds coming in at NZ$560m a unit from a budget of $3.35B for the six ships. Seems they have gone for a methodical development of the Daegu's. Your right about it being a tad on the small size - I would think for us that 4000+ tonne - 130m+ for a modern frigate would be the minimum size of any replacement. Anyway another suspect for the Anzac Class replacement investigation list along with the KDX-IIa, Type 26, FREMM et al.

Tattoos are one thing but facial tattoos are something else entirely. I'm not so sure I agree about allowing this, but that's the way the world is turning so who am I to hold it back.

Just out of interest the Danish King Frederick IX who reigned from 47-72 was covered in tattoos, he was also in the Navy.

All below the neck & above the wrist.

According to my mother, he once slapped her bum & called her "a cheeky English miss" when she said "Hello Freddie" when he greeted her aunt (who he knew from dining at the Kong Frederick Hotel where she worked at the time) by name. Her oldest sister (still alive - my mother was the oldest of four) confirms the story. The aunt declined to comment during her life. Apparently, they were admiring his yacht at the time, & he & another bloke strolled up.

I ought to check the date with my aunt. Maybe I was there, but not yet known to exist.

cool story Swerve, the Danish royals are a colourful bunch, the current queen smokes like a chimley and swears like a trooper, it probably makes Mary feel quite at home.
