Russian Navy Discussions and Updates

From what I understand the M90FR gas turbines are built using componets from Zorya-Mashproject in Ukraine and NPO-Saturn in Russia, the design is actually Russian. My guess is that Saturn will take over the production of the Ukranian built components.
Well they need to get the facilities to do this first. They need a lot of those turbines. Not to mention they're also now producing new turbines for 11356 frigates, and the 22380 corvettes.

Russia laid down 2 more Corvettes in the Steregushchy class on February 20.

They were supposed to be project 20385s, but they engines on those are German, so instead they're project 20380s in name. In fact they're supposed to be 20385s, but with different engines. Other sources indicate that they may have the electronics of the 20385s, but otherwise be the regular 20380 (meaning the same weapon systems).

Meanwhile the Stoykiy is currently in repairs, even though it was only handed over last year. Apparently 3 of the 4 generators broke down.

Very much so. I have a lot of time for vessels of this type, much more capable and survivable than a FAC, delivering near (or equal to) frigate capability at lower cost, in particular lower through life costs than a full sized frigate. Its not just Russia building them either with a number of nations including Turkey and South Korea, the USNs LCS is similar in some ways but not as well armed while being much faster and more flexible.

Understanding this is a thread on the Russian Navy, I'd like to get your thoughts on the flexibility v light armaments of the LCS/SSC.

Sure, lets bump it over to the USN thread though. I need to crash now but will have a look tomorrow.

The OKR Lider "destroyer" will be laid down in 2017. Probably nuclear, with a displacement of 14 000 tons. It will carry the Kalibr, Oniks, and the S-500 with the ability to strike objects in outer space. A total of 12 are planned.

To me this looks like a new nuclear battle cruiser.
I think most people that are reading about this are coming to a similar conclusion, more a capital ship than an escort, I can't see Russia building 12 of these either, I expect them to be far to costly.

Well they could. The question is, in what time frame, and at the cost of giving up what other projects. For example, there was a fairly clear path of restoring air-craft carriers to the VMF, by first building up expeditionary capability as well as experience with the Mistrals, later with an upgraded Admiral Kuznetsov (rumors were that the weapons would get removed, making room for more aircraft like the Vikramaditya, but details are lacking), then with a new aircraft carrier project. But now the Mistrals are in trouble, the Kuznetsov refit is in question, and the new carrier project is somewhere on the horizon. Hell with the conflict with Ukraine even the frigate and corvette programs are in rough waters. So it remains to be seen how things proceed.

That's just it though, the destroyer project will be competing for funding with the likes of Yasen, Borey, potentially aircraft carriers and the various other submarine and escort projects as well as returning to service of Kirov's and SSNs and refits of the rest of the escort fleet. I just can't see how the funding and the stated aims of the Russian navy match up, when I read announcements from Russian naval officials/MOD for new projects the numbers involved seem way more aspirational than realistic.

With all those predicted upgrades and new builds I would also question actual physical building capacity along with the huge cost invoved (large refits often costing more and being more difficult than new builds). Especially with poor record of recent Russian ship building programs

The carrier project is ALWAYS on the horizon and always remains there. :p:
Maybe. It honestly remains to be seen. There could be a new radical VMF policy shift, that will leave the destroyer battlecruisers scrapped, and a new carrier project with much more modest escorts. It all remains to be seen. Meanwhile Yantar shipyards is about to get a new batch of orders, as heavily hinted at by their director.

I don't think yard capacity is a big an issue as you think it is. Yantar has been quietly churning out frigates for India and the Russian Navy since 2003. There are other yards which could be used for production of corvettes and frigates, Krasnoye Sormovo comes to mind, they are one of the best yards in Russia, very efficient production, always build on time, and at the moment with civilian contracts drying up naval production could fill the gap.

Meanwhile Yantar shipyards is about to get a new batch of orders, as heavily hinted at by their director.
An additional order from Indian for more frigates has been on the cards for a while.
