DUBAI -- Jordan has launched a joint venture with Australia for air reconnaissance projects in the region.

The military-owned King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau has joined Australia's Seabird Aviation to provide patrol and surveillance aircraft for Iraq, Jordan and Gulf Cooperation Council states. The two companies will cooperate in the assembly of Seabird's SB7L-360 Seeker aircraft.

Under an agreement, the two firms established a company in Jordan to assemble the Seeker. The new firm, Seabird Aviation, Jordan, plans to prepare four Seeker aircraft for operations by the end of 2003. The company has also been developing a military version, called the SB-9 Stormer.

The company has exhibited the Seabird Seeker at the Dubai-2003 aerospace exhibition. Seabird has entered a bid for the procurement of the military and commercial surveillance aircraft by Iraq's Coalition Provisional Authority.
