Smoke, fog, mist etc and the effect on laser guidance systems

Hi there,

I have a couple of questions regarding how modern systems like Vikr, Refleks, (SALH versions of) hellfire, laser 2.75" etc overcome effects of mist, fog, smoke etc. Particularly the Starstreak Thor, LMM like systems that would be expected to maintain track on relatively fast moving fast changing targets.

1- What effect do obscurants like smoke, fog, mist, cloud have on laser designation of a target?
2- what is done to overcome these environmental challenges?
3- How does this effect the reliability of these systems to provide effective results on targets?

Separately how does SALH effect the kinematic performance of sam systems like Starstreak? does the need to follow a beam present any disadvantages when trying to plot an interception of a moving 3D target?

And again separately with something like the laser guided 5" zuni is there any aspect of its design that would limit its worth as an adapted SALH guided ground to air munition if suitable guidance could be provided? Specifically the air frame?

Appreciate any thoughts or input.

Kind regards,

Shane
