ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Two fuel tanks fell from a Pakistani air force plane after takeoff Sunday and hit a guard post on the ground at a base in northwestern Pakistan, sparking a fire and killing two soldiers, an official said.

The external tanks dropped off a Chinese-made A-5 jet because of "technical malfunctioning" at the base in Peshawar, about 145 kilometers (90 miles) northwest of the capital, Islamabad, said Pakistan air force spokesman Air Commodore Sarfaraz Khan.

The two soldiers died on the spot. It was unclear whether the soldiers were hit by metal from the tanks or died from the fire, which was quickly extinguished.

Khan said officials were investigating why the tanks detached from the aircraft.

May Their souls rest in peace indeed a sad thing to hear.Number of accidents are increasing in PAF they must pay more attention,as old fighters need much more attention.

Chinese A-5 aircraft are version of J-6 or MiG-19, which is an old Russian technology of the 50's with extra fuel drop tanks. It is time PAF should phase out J-6 and A-5 aircrafts.

I agree and understandable.

I feel there is peace in the horizon between Pakistan and India, many things would be resolved automatically for betterment of the people in both countries.

Well this is the second time that PAk fighter plane droped fules tanks , few years back F16 also dropped empty fuel tanks killing a family ,,,,,, Pak Airfore should made accountable to this accident and also find out why this happen and also take steps to make this happen again.

Mukul it was a Mirage V PA which dropped the tanks earlier. An investigation was held which cleared the pilot of any charges. The plane had developed some technical malfunction and the guy had to jettison the tanks. The pilot had aimed for a drainage canal in the thickly populated region. One of the tanks actually fell in the canal while the other one, sadly, landed on a house. The family was compensated I think.

Don't know about this incident though. Maybe the A-5s are getting old.

Yeah, these A-5s are trouble much like Indian Mig-21s. More of F-7pgs would be better than these old jets.
