On 27/3/06 goverment agencies reveled that India has commenced the construction of latest project P15Alpha class destroyer named INS Kolkata at mazagon dock second in P15A class after INS Banglore. The ship will be commissioned and join IN in 2010.
The ship will have latest arms and ammo. including the brahmos missile . It is not clear how many tubes of brahmos will be present but initial estimate is that it will carry 6 missiles. The vessels have a length of 163 metres, a width of 17.4 meters and a displacement of 6,800 tons and will carry two helicopters(large) or three ALH helicopters on board. The ship will be propelled by four gas turbines, which is designed to achieve speed in excess of 30 knots.
Does any one have pictures of this ship or layouts????? Any Knowledge the exact number of brahmos missiles it will be having and their range???

Yes I would like to correct myself INS kolkata was launched. I saw the pictures in a leading newspaper but was amazed to found that there was no weapon systems visible on the ship. Also the ship looked like it was incomplete with no presence of control room, radars and lots of other equipments which are required in ship. I think it was launched in hurry to make room for others new ships to start with construction!!!!!!!
Does any body have more clarification on it?????

Here are some of the weapon systems which are proposed for INS kolkata of P15A class destroyer..

TOI has reported that it carries 4 AK-630 ( M ) gatling guns , which probably means it may carry the point defence Barak-1 , The IN is trying to standardise on Barak-1 where ever possible.

Some time back FORCE had reported and even the model of the P-15A displayed at AI-05 shows that the P-15A will carry 16 Brahmos , 48 VL Shtil-1 and some Israel/Indian countermeasures/EW equipment.

A lethal combination of stealth and strength

Arunkumar Bhatt
INS Kolkata is the most complex multi-role destroyer

MUMBAI: Armed with supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles, INS Kolkata is the l argest and most lethal multi-role destroyer of the Indian Navy. It will be the first of Project 15 Alpha. Though of the Delhi class, it has been modified extensively to add stealth.
As Roopa Byce, wife of Vice-Admiral Sangram Singh Byce, Flag Officer Commanding-In-Chief of the Western Naval Command, pressed a button on Thursday, the warship slid down the slipway of the Mazagon Dock into the Arabian Sea to the tune of Sare jehan se achchha.
Ms. Byce named the destroyer, resplendent in colourful buntings, Kolkata.
The destroyer's keel was laid in September 2003. It is likely to be commissioned in the Navy in 2010. Two more Kolkata class vessels will be inducted in the subsequent two years. The Kolkata has 16 BrahMos launchers — eight on each side.
The destroyer is likely to get long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM). The Mazagon Dock has not named the missile but indicated that it is being "co-developed" by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
Vertical launch system

A defence source said the destroyer might have a 24-cell vertical launch system for SAMs in its forward and aft areas, making it a total of 48. Four AK-630 rapid-fire guns would back the missiles. The ship will have a gun for surface targets. There are also twin-tube torpedo launchers and anti-submarine rocket launchers.
Besides a multi-function radar system, the destroyer has the Humsa-NG hull mounted sonar and a Nagin active towed array sonar.
Like the Delhi class, Kolkata will be able to operate two multi-role helicopters.
All sensors and weapons are integrated in a state-of-the-art system; the networking of the weapons and censors will enable the warship to combat multi-threats in different dimensions simultaneously.
INS Kolkata's sides are covered and rounded, making detection difficult. All missile launchers and bases of the superstructure are covered for the same reason. A four reversible gas turbine propulsion system will afford the warship to cruise in excess of 30 knots. Chief of the Army Staff Gen. J.J. Singh, who was the chief guest, stressed the need for an advanced and strong navy in the emerging geo-political scenario.

did you note ,that it shall carry upto 48 long range surface to air missiles being jointly developed by the drdo, the only missile that i can think of in this category is the indo-israeli barak2.

check out this second article,it also contains the images of the launch:

the vessel has just been launched(the first time it touches water),this is the tougher part, the outfitting of the superstructure and the sensors will begin now, then comes the systems integration all this means that the vessel will join the indian navy(commissioning) in 2010.

suryaa ,indian navy plans to acquire around 160 warships and 30 submarines ,while the coast guard plans to acquire 120+ boats over the long run.

the aircraft carrier(air defence ship ) resembles the italian cavour class, the italian company fincantierry will be systems integrator ,the french company dcni was the initial consultant, the cavour is 25000 ton aircraft carrier while the ads is around 40000 tons, hence you an expect the ads to be a multirole vessel ,for more info on the cavour class check out http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/num/ and for more info on the ads including its artists impression check out http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/NAVY/ADS.html

for detailed information on every other indian navy project i suggest you check out http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/NAVY/Surface.html.

as far as the p15a class of destroyer is concerned ,it is india's first indigenously designed stealth destroyer,it is the most powerfull destroyer in the region,it has been designed for handling multi-dimensional threats (land, air ,sea and sub surface),it is india's first warship with aaw(anti air warfare capability ) and is to be equipped with the indo-israeli barak2 missile which has a range in excess of 70+kms,the p15a would be the first indigenously developed warship to be able to carry the brahmos cruise missile.

the emphasis is on developing stealth platforms capable of handling multi dimensional threats, the other projects are the p17a nilgiri class of stealth frigates which are to be an enlarged and stealthier versions of the russianproject 1135.g krivack class also in service the indian navy as the talwar class and the p28 class of stealth corvettes which are based on the russian project ms20382 steregushhiy design(these are multirole stealth warships with special emphasis on the anti-submarine warfare capability).

indian navy also plans to augment its amphibious assaulth capability by acquiring the us amphibious assault vessel the 18000 ton uss trenton ,these may be followed later by the french mistral class(grse is carry out studies on the viability of this project).
