NEW DELHI: Signalling that it's ready for intensifying defence ties with New Delhi, Washington has cleared the sale of the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) anti-missile defence system to India on the eve of Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee's visit to the US this month.

Government sources said that the possible sale offer has been conveyed through diplomatic channels to the highest levels including the Defence Ministry.

Though New Delhi has just been informed of the offer, Washington has given a green signal to the PAC-3 manufacturers, Lockheed Martin, to give a technical presentation to India on the state-of-the-art anti-missile defence system.

The PAC-3 system is a big step beyond Washington's earlier offer for sale of PAC-2. In February this year, a US team, headed by Edward Ross from the Defence Security Cooperation Agency, had briefed South Block on technical details of PAC-2.

Unlike previous Patriots, which operate by getting close to targets and blasting them out of the sky, PAC-3 interceptors have no explosives, relying instead on kinetic energy (hit to kill concept) to eliminate short and medium-range missiles carrying nuclear, biological or chemical warheads.

A PAC-3 system carries smaller but four times more missiles than PAC-2 (16 vs 4) and has a longer range (150 km vs 70 km). Until last year, 175 PAC-3 systems were inducted into US Army.

Sources said that the PAC-3 offer, along with possible sale of F-16 and F-18 fighters to India, is going to be discussed during Mukherjee's trip to the US beginning June 27. Accompanied by Defence Secretary Ajai Vikram Singh, Mukherjee will meet US Vice President Dick Cheney and visit the National Aerospace Command Centre at Colorado Springs. Mukherjee will also visit the joint command centre at Norfolk, Virginia.

The growing defence ties between India and US have already raised concerns in Pakistan with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz looking forward to visit Washington after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's trip. It is learnt that Pakistan has already sought dates for Aziz's travel but the visit is expected to fructify towards July-end.

However, both New Delhi and Washington are pitching their engagement in a larger context. The PAC-3 offer is a clear indication that Washington is satisfied with New Delhi's commitment to non-proliferation. For its part, New Delhi sees it a step towards opening of all barriers on high-technology trade.
The coming US trip of PM Manmohan Singh will be very interesting indeed!

Wouldn’t it be feasible for India to have a dual layered system consisting of PAC-2/3, PAC-2 for aircraft and PAC-3 for ballistic missiles?

No way Russians are going to get angry.
Its meaningless to buy PAC when we have more effective S-300 Availaible.

I think pac-3 might be more capable but expensive. Its better that india tries to develop its own version, no matter how rudimentary it might look at the start but it will make it self-dependent, moreover, it should be platform independent so that it can be compatible if india decides to be part of NMD in future.

I can agree with that. :)

India can develop missiles (Akash, etc), but has a long way to go wrt the radars and guidance systems needed to intercept a BM. Other points: PAC-3 will integrate with Green Pine, and S-300 won't. India also has to consider who the SAM network is designed to defend against, i.e. China and Pakistan. China already has S-300, so the system is compromised in that regard. And the current EW/ECM suite fitted out on the Block 60 F-16's is designed to defeat the S-300/400 series. If Pakistan acquires this system with their F-16's, they have a good chance of getting past an S-300 battery.

PAC-3 has been extensively tested against BMD's, and has shown that it can take them down in multiple launch scenarios. The Russian system is unproven, and basically a copy of the first generation Patriot. But at the rate India moves wrt new systems, we'll still be talking about this in 5 years, lol.

there have been reports that india is working on a long range surface to air missile which is expected to be testfired either by the end of this year or early next year(range reported to be 160 kms) india is using a radar purchase from israel for this purpose(the swordfish)

by the way guys i would like to know wether pac3 can be used on board warships to provide them with defence from cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and combat aircrafts:confused: also i would like to know what is the velocity of pac3:confused: :coffee

There are strong indication that this may the latter half of this long range air defense missile (motor dia 740/620 mm, length 6 m).

some info on swordfish

EL/M-2090 Green Pine Radar (NEW ENTRY)
India have received two Green Pine L-band, phased array, dual-mode detection and fire control radar comprising of 2,000 transmit-receive modules. Green Pine is said to be capable of tracking ballistic missiles from a range of up to 500-km. Integration of Arrow 2 Anti-Tactical Ballistic Missile (ATBM) system in Indian armed forces service depends upon several complex factors including the requisite United States administration permission to the Israeli authorities.

In addition another active phased-array radar system, called Sword Fish, was purchased from Israel in early 2004 for $50 million and is undergoing trials at Hasan in Karnataka state.

Meanwhile during the second-half of February 2005, a four-member high-level US defence team led by Edward Ross of the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), had met officials of the international security division of the Indian External Affairs and Defence ministries and presented "a technical brief" of the Patriot PAC-2. The US administration's clearance for a classified technical presentation of PAC-2 system came as part of the Next Step in Strategic Partnership (NSSP) agreement initiated by the two countries during 2004.

well here is the info about the indian missile

Trials of long-range SAMs by year-end

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Indian defence scientists have embarked on developing long-range (100 km) surface to air missiles (SAMs), the flight trials of which are expected to begin by the year-end.

The missiles with multi-platform systems can be launched from ship and ground. The propulsion, control guidance and other systems for the "hit-to-kill" missiles were being built, according to V.K.Saraswat, Director, Research Centre Imarat, a DRDO institution.

He told reporters here on Wednesday that the development phase of long- range SAMs was expected to be over in two to three years. Feasibility studies were also on for developing short-range helicopter-launch anti-ship missiles.

At present in the SAM class of missile, India has medium range Akash, which has a range of about 27 km.

Apart from SAMs, a long-range Air Defence System was also being developed. Once deployed, the radars of such a system would have multiple target tracking capacity and could simultaneously track 200 aircraft up to a distance of 400 km.

Predicting that future wars would be network-centric and not platform-centric, he said the coordination of all platforms in a network would be required. India had an excellent command, control and communication network which was totally encrypted and secure

More news of same kind :coffee

Can you tell us why you think the S-300 is more capable than PAC-3?
Oh Sorry What I meant was India could get it easily and no threat of sanctions like that of PAC-3.
Generally most people think Russian SAMs are the best one in the world either it S-300 or SA-6 or SA-2.

Raytheon is out 2 loot poor indians by billions, should indians go ahead for these billion plus metal junk which would be of no use for India on following grounds.

It is not proven to have 100 pcnt kill.
What are the likelyhoods of Pakistan striking indians with nukes in a suicide move? the percentage is marely below 5, considering that Indians have not fought with them in 34 years despite pakistanis provoking indians as on parliament attack.

US arms are unrelaible as far as their spare parts are concerned for which indians have best experience. And in a case like this ( such a complex electronic mumble jumble ) if a simple fuse is blown which renders entire battery worthless can not be replaced by indians without knowing the proper amperage, and raytheon wont give you any blueprints.

Indians would be stupid to go for such a exorbitant armament which has a range of 150 KM only thus we may need about 12 baterries to cover 1600 kilometers india pakistan border intact.

12 batteries = how many billions?
You decide!

So far its just been offered. It's upto the Indians to purchase it or not. ANd many would (rightly) consider the PAC3's of not being "junk".
