A senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said that a strange bright object that was spotted over Iran and the neighboring countries this week was most likely a failed ballistic missile test by either Russia or the US.
Speaking to reporters here in Tehran on Sunday, IRGC Lieutenant Commander Brigadier General Hossein Salami said that identifying the technical identity of the recent bright object is "difficult".
"But" salami stated "the existing evidence and assumptions at large point to the possibility of an unsuccessful testing of a long-range ballistic missile by either the Russians or the Americans."
The commander said that the test was more likely a Russian missile test.
A bright object lit up Middle Eastern skies earlier this month.
The object was seen not just in Iranian skies but also from a number of other countries in the region, including the Republic of Azerbaijan, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan.
Many people recorded images of the object on their mobiles.
