According to defenseindustrydaily, israeli intelligence discovered that Hezbollah are operating Pantsir-S1 in Lebanon, obviously provided by the iranians. So Putin has frozen the 800m$ S300 sale.
Report: Putin freezes S-300 missile transfer to Iran - Israel News, Ynetnews

I thought the Iranians were more competent than this. Did they really think that the israelis wouldn't find out or that they would get out of it somehow?

Not just the Russians. The Saudis will take French arms bound for the Lebanese military in order to keep them from reaching Hezbollah. The arms are part of a US$3 billion aid package for Lebanon. According to the article the Saudis are hardening their attitude towards Hezbollah, which is unsurprising considering Hezbollah's ties to Iran.

Strikes me as an odd claim to make. Syria got Pantsyr-1S vehicles from Russia. It was speculated that Iran funded the purchase, and that a few of the vehicles would end up in Iran, but if anyone handed these systems over to Hezbollah, it would most likely be the Syrians.

Though this does follow a pattern. The newer Tochka-U ballistic missiles appear to be operated by Hezbollah as well and they're supplied by Russia (with the Syrians being the middle man). The T-90s in Syria are rumored to have some Iranian crew members. It looks as if all the more advanced equipment is operated by someone other then the SAA.

S-300 missiles handed to country's air defense system

According to this report the S-300 have been handed over. It also mentions an indigenous system.

I wonder when/if they will start a T-90 production effort. From what I understand their current armor is obsolete.

Iran starts receiving second batch of S-300s

Echelon-Defense.com

As we pointed out in our previous article, Iran has started to receive the second, and probably final batch of its S-300 order from Russia.

Witnesses on the ground in Tehran were able to locate the sophisticated anti-air system as it was being towed on a transport vehicle on the Azadegan highway.

The contract for what is thought to be the PMU-2 variant of the S-300s was inked between Iran and Russia in 2007, but delivery was postponed due to external pressure.

Looks like Russia will fulfill the contract before the end of 2016.

Welcome to the forum. We require some commentary besides a straight cut and paste of an article, which is the case in your post. I would suggest that you read the RULES and introduce yourself.

I find it very hard to believe hezbollah are operating Pantsir-S1, because they're a geurrilla group that does not rely on heavy weaponry like Trucks, tanks, IFV, etc.. even their 122mm rocket launchers are mounted on small vehicles.

In Syria they started using more heavy equipment like tanks and IFVs.

And they managed to use C-802 AShMs against the Israelis.

Yeah at this point we should consider Hezbollah to be a regular military, albeit with a light infantry focus. They've been operating armor, moving around in conventional vehicle convoys, and fighting heavy pitched battles. They've been using ballistic missiles, and I wouldn't be surprised to see traditional artillery in their hands.

If true that Pantsirs are operating in Lebanon, they may have been from Syria since they have made several announcements of transferring advanced weapons to Hezbollah in retaliation to IAF strikes. The Kornets of the 2006 war were from Syria and several truck mounted high calibre rocket artillerys too and what not. the syrians also proliferated the Pantsirs to Iran in the first place. It is entirely possible that the syrians themselfes would operate Pantsirs in Lebanon and other advanced weaponry like ASMs.

The iranians have deployed and tested their S300 PMU2 complex. In state television they claimed they were deployed near their nuclear enrichment facilities, I guess they are deeply concerned about a signature israeli precision strike. If Trump causes a (more) serious crisis in US-Iran relations I believe the israelis will try to take advantage.

They are already performing some strikes in Syria without retaliation. Of course, the range difference is huge.

On another note, why haven't the iranians started a massive effort on local licensed copies of the T-90? They need a robust modern MBT in huge numbers, don't they? Not like they have many choices, either. Their own designs seem useless.

The much discussed Qarar tank appears to be going into production as an upgrade turret for the T-72. This indirectly confirms Russian involvement because the design is obviously a knock-off of the Russian Proryv-2 OKR which was a replacement combat module for all 3 T-72-80-90 tanks.

EDIT: Some additional photos.

EDIT2: Gur-Khan claims that they have a Slovenian FCS that they bought pre-sanctions, a new K-1 based ERA upgrade, different atmospheric sensors and RCWS design. This would point to the tank being primarily a local upgrade of the T-72S and bear little more then external similarity to the T-90MS.
