KUALA LUMPUR --- EADS will develop an air defence system together with the Malaysian company System Consultancy Services Sdn.Bhd. (SCS), Kuala Lumpur. Thanks to the latest technologies, the system will guarantee a more effective coordination between the existing anti-aircraft facilities.

As EADS announced on Friday, the two companies signed the corresponding cooperation agreement in Kuala Lumpur. The air defence system will be based on the concept devised by SCS and on technologies developed by the EADS business unit Defence & Communication Systems, which have already been used successfully by the German armed forces. The concrete work packages of the partner companies will be finalised during the ensuing negotiations for the agreement.

“The collaboration with SCS will enable us to combine the technological capabilities in Kuala Lumpur with our experience in the field of air defence to provide a solution which meets precisely those needs that the region has,†explained Stefan Zoller, Head of the Business Unit Defence & Communication Systems (in formation).

The EADS share of the project is chiefly based on the air defence command and control system SAMOC (Surface-to-Air Missile Operations Center), which was developed for the German armed forces and already offers network-centric operations capabilities. Thereby, the Malaysian air defence will be in a position to participate in multinational alliances and joint operations. The cooperation agreement involves close collaboration when the software functionalities of SAMOC are integrated into the IT architecture of the Malaysian armed forces. Furthermore, it calls for the definition of the interfaces specific to the weapon system and definition of the interfaces with the sensors.

EADS Defence and Communication Systems is part of the newly restructured Defence and Security Systems division of EADS. DCS has been created in order to better respond to the new evolution of the defence markets which are more focused on global solutions and integrated systems. For this purpose, DCS regroups several defence activities with the telecommunications activities of EADS.

Its field of competence encompasses manned and unmanned systems such as tactical and strategic UAVs, manned mission aircraft, Command, Control, Communication Information systems (C3I), Air and Naval Defence, Public Safety including Homeland Security and Communication and Information Networks. DCS as the EADS System House implements advanced defence concepts, simulation and experimentation tools like NETCOS.

EADS is the second largest aerospace and defence company in the world with revenues of 29.9 billion euros in the year 2002 and a workforce of more than 100,000. The EADS Group includes the aircraft manufacturer Airbus, the world's largest helicopter supplier Eurocopter and the joint venture MBDA, the second largest missile producer in the global market. EADS is the major partner in the Eurofighter consortium, is the prime contractor for the Ariane launcher, develops the A400M military transport aircraft and is the largest industrial partner for the European satellite navigation system Galileo.
