At sea aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) Oct. 29, 2002 -- An F/A-18C “Hornet” from the “Dambusters” of Strike Fighter Squadron One Nine Five (VFA 195) assigned to Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW 5), approaches the carrier’s flight deck while USS Paul F. Foster (DD 964) steams astern the aircraft carrier. Other ships often steam in close quarters with aircraft carriers during flight operations, providing rescue and force protection operations. Kitty Hawk is the world’s only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier and operates out of Yokosuka, Japan.U.S. Navy photo by Photographer’s Mate 3rd Class Calvert T. Frantom.
