The Mistral class represents an ambitious, new development for the French navy. Built quickly in a modular design and manufacturing environment, the Mistral class will provide the French with much improved over-the-horizon amphibious assault capability similar to that possed by the United States with its Tarawa Class (which it vaguely resembles), and the UK with its Ocean Class.
