Manufactured by the German company Thyssen - Henschel as the Transporter Panzer 1, this is an amphibious vehicle with a water speed of 10km/h. During the Gulf War the UK purchased 10 of the NBC Reconnaissance version of this vehicle and they will now become the core element of the UK's Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defence. For NBC Defence work the vehicles will be equipped with the joint US/UK Provisional Biological Detection System (PBDS).

Fuchs can detect gamma radiation and identify either surface deposits of chemical agents or chemical vapour. The vehicle is equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) and provides the crew with integral collective protection.
