Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta told a visiting Jordanian delegation he is firmly committed to the U.S. military partnership with that nation’s armed forces, Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said today.
This morning’s meetings featured productive discussions among Panetta, Lt. Gen. Mashal al-Zaben, Jordan’s Joint Chiefs chairman, and Lt. Gen. Prince Feisal bin al Hussein, Little told reporters, adding that topics included events in the Middle East, including the unrest in Syria and the situation in Iran.
The secretary also “expressed his deep appreciation for Jordan’s contributions in support of coalition operations, including Afghanistan,” Little said. Jordan has been a troop-contributing nation for NATO’s International Security Assistance Force since 2007.
Mashal and Feisal are in Washington for the 34th U.S.-Jordan Joint Military Commission, the department’s annual bilateral consultation with the Jordanian armed forces.
