Defence science and technology plays a crucial role in keeping both Australia and the United States secure, the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, said in Washington D.C. this week.

Mr Snowdon was in the US to discuss the US Defence science research program and Australia-US Defence science and technology cooperation.

"Australia, through the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, works closely with organisations in the US to deliver capability for both the Australian and US Defence Forces," Mr Snowdon said.

"While in terms of size Australia may seem an unequal partner in an alliance, in terms of defence science and technology, we bring enormous value to the table."

The Minister met with United States officials to discuss a wide-array of science and technology matters, including bilateral science and technology projects, collaborative efforts, and improvised explosive devices counter-measures.

"The visit has reinforced the significance of our bilateral science and technology cooperation and allowed me to explore opportunities for further work together.

"Australia places great importance on our US science and technology relationship, and it is clear too, that our scientists are held in high regard here in America."

The visit also saw Minister Snowdon strengthen relationships with the US Government as well as meet with US Defence counterparts and industry.

"It has been useful to discuss the US experience in encouraging innovation between Defence, academia and industry, and learn more about their models of rapid science and technology development through to acquisition," said Mr Snowdon.

"The breadth of bilateral science and technology activity underway between Australia and the United States is impressive, and I am confident that both nations will continue to benefit from our combined defence science efforts."
