Aerojet, SACRAMENTO: Aerojet, a GenCorp Inc. company, announced today that it won a contract from the U.S. Air Force to develop new solid rocket motor technologies for application on future Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Systems.
In the first six-month phase, Aerojet will conduct analyses to evaluate solid rocket motor (SRM) technologies balancing cost and performance for a future strategic strike system.
If selected by the Air Force for the second phase, Aerojet will develop advanced manufacturing processes that optimize low life cycle costs, and will produce a full-scale demonstrator SRM for testing.
Aerojet will build on its 50-year heritage as an SRM supplier for Minuteman, Peacekeeper and Small ICBM missile systems to meet the goals of U.S. Air Force Strategic Strike missile systems for low-cost, high performance, and high reliability. Additionally, Aerojet will draw on its recent program experience in materials and manufacturing process technology to produce an affordable, sustainable next generation ICBM.
“Aerojet's unique understanding of the requirements, environments, logistics and cost drivers for upper-stage SRM systems will result in a full- scale demonstrator motor ready for application on the next generation of Strategic Strike missile systems,” said Aerojet President Michael Martin. “The technologies Aerojet develops under this new contract will both sustain and transform our nation's future strategic strike capability.”
Aerojet is a world-recognized aerospace and defense leader principally serving the missile and space propulsion, and defense and armaments markets. GenCorp is a leading technology-based manufacturer of aerospace and defense products and systems with a real estate business segment.
