Containerising the Defence Force

Recent events have highlighted to the ADF the need and benefits of containerization in the rapid mobilisation and deployment of its troops.

Over the past 8 years Royal Wolf Trading has been working closely with the ADF and has spent the past 5 years designing, engineering and manufacturing purpose built containers or modified versions of existing designs to meet the ADF's needs.

"The first objective is to determine the application and understand the users' requirements of the containers," according to Chris Singer, Royal Wolf General Manager - Mining and Defence. "Once this is established the design team layout the floor plans and model the units to achieve maximum efficiency and use."

The containers are modified to stay within all ISO shipping/transport configurations. Components such as recessed side doors, retractable air-conditioning units and service compartments for power, data, water and waste facilities are what make these units so versatile and transportable. Other features included are full ventilation systems for temperature control in extreme conditions, recessed door bar ladder systems for accessing the rooftops and full drop down sides to increase the surface area by up to 180 percent.

Royal Wolf has also manufactured a bin-pack storage unit that can accommodate all bin-pack sizes and configurations. The trunks are located in shelves that are fully secured whilst in transit. Roller systems are also available for the larger / heavier trunks.

The latest and most innovated construction is the "Double Drop Down Side Container". The advantage of this container is in its total versatility of application. Currently they are being used by the ADF for laundry, shower and toilet units. Kitchens, Stores and IT uses have also been suggested as potential applications.

The customisation of containers for specific applications have assisted the ADF in many areas and when one unit identifies a need for a particular design of container, generally that need will apply to other divisions around the country.

Now an approved and recognised "Defence Supplier", Royal Wolf continues to dedicate energy and resources to the container needs of the ADF whether it be for accommodation, ablution, storage or refrigeration.

They do some nice work for Emerg Fire Vehicles as well. I worked with JRA when the Perenties were being made. It was one of my more interesting contracts. They were building armoured cars for the Kuwaitis at the same time.
Varley were consulted on some of the internal layout issues.
