WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States has approved a Bahraini request for naval equipment.

The Defense Department has awarded a $10.1 million contract to Goodrich Corp. Engineered Polymer Products, for a range of equipment for naval vessels. The firm, based in Jacksonville, Fla., will supply composite sonar domes, sonar dome rubber windows and associated engineering services and support for Bahrain's navy.

Pentagon officials said most of the contract will be conducted for the U.S. Navy as well as the navies of Japan and Taiwan. The Bahraini portion of the contract amounts to one percent.

The contract is part of a long-running project to maintain the navies of Bahrain and other U.S. allies. In 2002, Bahrain was designated a major non-NATO ally.
