New helicopter carrier for Japan

On the 23 of November the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force announced plans for a new large helicopter carrier (called helicopter destroyer for political reasons).
The new ship will be about 250 meters long and have a dicplacement of about 20,000 tons empty and 30,000 tons with full load.

I wounder how big you can make a ship and still call it a destroyer,

Ship types are not defined just by size. You have to take into account what the ships tasks will be, but in this case you could call it a helicopter carrier and not be wrong. If we defined by just size, basically every modern warship should be moved up one ship type in comparison to their predecessors: frigate=destroyer, destroyer=cruiser.

Besides, names don't matter anyway:

What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.

Actually, to the pre-pre-predecessor. I.e. pretty much anything between 3.000 and 10.000 tons could very well be classed a light cruiser, anything above a heavy cruiser. The "corvettes" today are the size of pre-WW2 destroyers.

Only 1 proposed at the moment, but the Hyuga and its sister ship Ise are replacing both the DDHs of the Harune class, this is supposed to replace the first of the 2 strong Shirane class. It would be logical to assume that this could be the first of 2.

amazing how 20000t was huge a few years back but the number of countries now building c30000t assault/carriers I wonder how many will operate F35s I suspect not Japan's. I I so hope the RN gets both of its 65000t carriers.
