Navy upgrading entire fleet

Staff Report

KARACHI: The Navy is in the process of upgrading its entire fleet with new ships and aircraft as part of the war on terror, chief of the naval staff Admiral Shahid Karimullah said on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference in the media centre of the Expo Centre, where the third defence exhibition IDEAS 2004 is taking place, Mr Karimullah said the Navy was in progress of manufacturing a third Agosta 92-B class submarine with French help. The Navy has already acquired two Agosta submarines, he said.

Admiral Karimullah said the navy was the first organization to organise an exhibition similar to IDEAS in 1999.

The admiral said the Navy had recently acquired the “Quwwat†fast attack missile craft.

He said the Navy had also acquired fast patrol boats and coastal tankers, which are on display at the dockyard. The boats have been built with the collaboration of China.

He further added that negotiations were underway for the production of a Trigger aircraft with China, for which a loan of $750 million was being negotiated.

The admiral stressed the need for the participation of the private sector for 100 percent indigenisation of defence products.

He said the best platform for such collaboration was an IDEAS-like exhibition. Admiral Karimullah also said the separation of the port and shipping ministries was a good move on the part of the government. Admiral Karimullah said the Navy was playing is role in the war on terror. He said the P-3 Orion aircrafts were expected from the US and they would replace their old Atlantic aeroplane fleet with the new P-3s. The admiral said they would receive the first two P-3 planes by November.

What does terrorism got to do with upgrading naval hardware? I think the term "war on terror" is being used for anything and everything.

exactly they-re using foreign funding military assistance to upgrade there Fleet. a clever tactic.

if theyr replacing there entire fleet that could mean that they are going to replace or are going to add more Destroyers to the fleet, they were talking to the Royal navy for older Destroyers. Any update.

That was EXACTLY what I proposed months ago in the "options for updating PAK Navy forum" (can't recall exact title...) Pakistan would be talking to the UK about Type 23 Frigates (5 available) and Type 42 Destroyers (3 available)... Both of which are very capable platforms with plenty of service life left in them, but are being retired due to budget cuts and the UK's plans to acquire new build Type 45 Destroyers...

Pakistan navy aims to bridge gap with India
Wednesday, September 15, 2004

Karachi, September 15: Pakistan's navy, striving to expand with Chinese and French technology, said on Wednesday it wanted more ships and submarines to narrow a huge gap in capabilities with India.

"The disparity between the Pakistan navy and Indian navy is colossal. It is not to our liking," Admiral Shahid Karimullah, chief of naval staff, told reporters in the port city of Karachi.

"Indians have no dearth of weapons supply from Russia, whereas we suffered because of sanctions," he added. "We have disparity in every field, whether you talk of ships or submarines."

Although the United States lifted sanctions after Pakistan joined the US-led war on terror, their effects remained, he said.

Karimullah was speaking at a news conference on the second day of an international defence exhibition.

Exhibitors and delegates from more than 50 countries are participating in the exhibition, which is being held under tight security because of the fear of sabotage or terror assaults by al Qaeda or local militant groups.

Pakistan, which sells around $100 million worth of weapons and ammunition abroad annually, is also hoping to use the exhibition to boost exports, offering to sell indigenously built missile boats and submarines.

GAP WITH INDIA A CONCERN

Karimullah said India's significant advantage in conventional military hardware was a major worry for Pakistan.

Karimullah said that without resolving the central dispute over divided Kashmir, the dream of a lasting peace in South Asia would not materialise.

"That's why Pakistan wants to maintain a minimum deterrence both in conventional and unconventional weapons," he said.

Naval experts say the gap between the Pakistani and Indian navies was around one to five, and government officials have warned that India's superiority in both spheres was a destabilising factor in the region.

Karimullah said Pakistan's navy was striving for self-reliance and its defence industry was rapidly expanding.

Pakistan has already built two Agosta 90-B submarines with French help. A third, capable of staying submerged longer, is now under construction, he said.

Three days ago, Pakistan inducted two indigenously built missile boats to its fleet, and a larger project of building frigates with Chinese help was planned.

Pakistan is trying to acquire a $750 million preferential loan from China to build four frigates over 13 years.

It is also seeking to buy anti-submarine and maritime surveillance P-3 aircraft from the United States.

The P-3s would replace the ageing Atlantic aircraft now in use, Karimullah said

thats probably the loan repayment, i doubt it would take 13 years to make four frigates would it!! they have an existing infrastructure to build warships, they may need expansion, but 13 years would mean that Pak navy would be footing the repayments rather then foreign sales helping out.

Aussie i wonder if they are going to replace all of there destroyers, since i think they want to rely on frigates, there destroyer fleets are quiet a bit antiquated.

at this point i think Frigates are more of viable option less maintenance cost less initial cost, i don't think PN should get any more destroyers they are lethal in-terms of weaponry load and the ultimate commanding post, but they are too expensive to maintain and mann. a frigate has the same sort of weaponry and the load can be adjusted, Oh rite and if you don't have access to a powerful Warfare computing systems, then powerful complex ships are useless, its best to grow slowly and build your own desinged ship based on needs. thats what pak navy is doing they will build what they need after learning how to build larger ships.
