Now she says she's buzzing the Reagan CSG...

Iranian UAV buzzes USS Ronald Reagan
TEHRAN, June 1 (UPI) -- An Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle purportedly buzzed a U.S. carrier in the Persian Gulf for 25 minutes before safely returning to its base.

Azerbaijan's Trend news agency reported on May 31 that according to an unidentified senior Iranian official, "our pilotless reconnaissance plane flew over the USS Ronald Reagan in the Persian Gulf unnoticed to the Americans for 25 minutes," according to Iran's Fars news agency.

While the official declined to give an exact date and time for the flight, he added that U.S. military radars tracked the UAV after 25 minutes, but although four fighters and two helicopters were sent to intercept it the UAV crossed the border back into Iran and landed before interception.

The official boasted, "This points to holes in the U.S. military reconnaissance systems deployed in the Persian Gulf."

The United States and its coalition partners currently have about 45 vessels in the Gulf and Red Sea region, including the USS Ronald Reagan, the Navy's newest aircraft carrier, and five escorts.

Of course sources tell me the Ronald Reagen had left station 12hrs before this occured which places her 500-600km away from the scene of the crime.

What will these jokers come up with next.

Mod edit:Path: There might be Iranians with similar opinions on this board that might find it offensive to be called jokers. Please refrain from using such language next time.

Crazy Iranian reports of UAVs apart, Iran can still be a serious threat : mines first of all, torpedo attacks by Kilos waiting in the water on the Gulf's bottom, attacks by small fast armed crafts hiding in the civilian traffic (kind of like what happened in Yemen to the USN destroyer)...

Force protection doesn't allow them to get that close anymore. Kilos operating in the Gulf would be cannon fodder, their only chance is to head to open water. It's not deep or murky enough to conceal them.

Hello Big-E. What if the Kilos were hiding on the bottom just outside of the Hormuz straits ? The water is deeper. Even worse, they could start deploying mines around and create a big havoc. Mine warfare is one of the rare areas where the USN isn't that well equipped after all (if I'm not wrong it's Naval Reserve that runs the dozen or so modern Ospreys...)

cheers

If they're laying mines in a compact area it shouldn't be too hard to track them.

Threats?

Wouldn't the land based missiles ASM's be the greatest threat first then mines as they bring it in close?

Hope you're right, because they will try to lay mines if it gets really hot. Btw we've got a dozen MCMs similar to the Ospreys Intermarine built in the US, just in case you need some help around Oman and Hormuz

cheers

They are a threat, but the USN has enough RAM and Phalanx (besides ESSM and SM-2) to defend itself. However the Iranians can use ASMs to sink tankers, clog Hormuz and send oil prices to the moon
I hate such blackmail !!

cheers nonetheless

this event did actually happen. but due to the laws of the sea in this area of sea the us carrier couldnt launch a plane to chase/destroy the drone. they had to launch an air force plane from an airforce base. which is why the drone buzzed the carrier for so long without getting chased/destroyed. needless to say the iranians withdrew long before any air force plan e could get close.

Don't forget the USN wouldn't send any major vessels past the strait of Hormuz until air superiority achieved, the surface fleet obliterated (which might take about 2 hours) the mines cleared and any submarine threat eliminated the whole operation would take no more then 2 days

Right, except that the mine warfare assets of the USN are bizarrely limited for the world's only superpower ... True, the USN uses MH-53 helos to supplement its few MCMs, but it would take much more than 2 days to clean up an area as wide as the Gulf of Oman. Especially if tankers start being hit and start spilling over oil and clogging the sea lanes.
Catastrophic scenario, hopefully
cheers

The Iranians are in a cant lose position. No-one would expect them to survive against the USN so any victories they can come up with, and USN ships sunk, will have tremendous propaganda value. They will always have oil as a trump card and can rebuild their little navy easily after a cessation of hostilities. Geographically they are in a strong position and if we dont get basing rights to operate USAF warplanes from other Gulf countries we could have a serious problem. The Iranians could care less about casualties where-as the western powers actually do place value on the lives of their troops.

We could do it in any event but the Iranians are in a strong position and I doubt they would be stupid enough to venture out and challenge the USN in blue water. "There" it wouldn't even be a fight.
