New Delhi, Sept. 12 (PTI): In a forward deployment, India has positioned a powerful naval flotilla comprising guided missile destroyers, stealth corvette and submarines in the strategic Persian Gulf area.

A Naval spokesman said "overseas deployment" in the Persian Gulf is for a duration of three weeks and is an exercise which the Indian Navy takes from time to time.

The task force comprising six warships is commanded by Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet Rear Admiral P S Pye, includes two indigenous daily class 6,700 tonnes displacement guided missile destroyer, the Indian Navy's latest acquisition, the Russian-built Stealth Frigate INS Talwar.

The Naval task force also includes indigenous missiles, INS Kulich and indigenous built fleet tanker INS Aditya.

The spokesman said the task force would be divided into two groups with the one group visiting Muscat, the capital of Oman from September 13 to 17 and the second group of the daily class destroyers, the fleet tanker Aditya would burst at the strategic Iranian port of Banfer Abbas on the Makram Coast from September 14 to 18.

The spokesman said during the three-week deployment, the warships would also make port calls at Abu Dhabi and Port Salman in Behrain.

This was an attempt to showcase advancement made by India in warships and its subsystem, including missiles, building torpedoes, sonars, radars and helicopters.

The fleet will return in early October.
