US discussing missile defence with India: US official
Dec 18, 2004 07:36:00 AM

Washington, Dec 18 (PTI) United States has been discussing with India and other countries cooperation on its national missile defence program which seeks to defend its territory against a ballistic missile attack, a Bush administration official has said:
"The governments with which we are either carrying out or discussing missile defence cooperation include Japan, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Israel, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Russia, Turkey, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ukraine, Taiwan and India," Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control Stephen Rademaker said here yesterday.

India and the United States had also conducted joint missile defence workshops, he said speaking at the American Foreign Policy Council's Conference on 'Missile Defenses and American Security.' In January, President George W. Bush and the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had announced the Next Steps in Strategic Partnership (NSSP) initiative which included an "expanding discussion" on missile defence, Rademaker said.

The NSSP "includes a strategic stability dialogue with India, including an expanding discussion on missile defence," he said.

Rademaker said participation in the US mis sile defence program and the level of protection afforded to allies and friends by the missile defence systems will be determined as the systems evolve and as appropriate political, technical and financial arrangements are agreed.

Interesting list of countries the US is in favor of including in the Missile Defence System. In the next 20-30 years we could very well see a block of mutually adjustable democratic nations sharing a common defence platform/ Not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

Oh man Srir can you edit so it's not bold font? It's hurting my eyes to read it.

Interesting though, India has been trying to obtain anti-ballistic missile capability since early 1990's. They already have a few regiment of S-300V deployed. It will be interesting to see if India will agree to take part of TMD and Russian's attitude towards this.

Ah had the bold to seperate out the article and my comment; anyway fixed. India has its own missile defence project including the S-300's and a more capable Akash intercepting missile. And Russia is herself believed to have been working with the USA in this global missile defence initiative.

It'll be interesting to see if protocol allows missile interceptors of Member Country A shoot down missiles that were aimed at Member Country B fired by Non-Member Country C. It almost calls for a worldwide block in which all countries will have to be compatible with one another.

PS: Oh and not to forget the Patriots and the Arrow2's that India has been offered and has expressed interest in.
