Secret new Russian missile fails in testing: Reports - The Times of India

MOSCOW: A new intercontinental Russian missile whose development has been kept as a state secret failed in its first test-firing and crashed back into the launch zone, reports said Wednesday.

Reports published on Russian news agencies about the failed test firing from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia appeared to be the first indication that the ground-based missile even existed.

"After launch, the missile fell back down onto the territory of the cosmodrome. There were no casualties or damage," a military source told the state RIA Novosti news agency.

It's completely unclear what missile this is. There are speculations that this might be project Avantguard, which may be a new missile or a different version of the RS-24 Yars. It might also be a new version of the old Courier missile, which was a highly mobile medium-long range missile that was harder to detect them a Topol TEL.

It makes me wonder with all the problems Russia has had with the Bulava if this isn't related in some way. Do these failures stem from design flaws, production problems, lack of resources, lack of experience of engineers compared to Cold war guys,etc......... all of the above?

The entire industry is suffering badly. Paychecks are small, few young people are choosing it, and the culture of quality production has eroded. Look at the recent rash of failed launches.

that and the fact that many of their rockets are using engines that have been on the shelves for decades.

In Russia; rocket launch you.
