Pakistan, US discuss missile defence

ISLAMABAD: In a sign of growing understanding between Pakistan and the United States, top officials of the two countries held bilateral consultations on missile defence here Friday.

The visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control Stephen Rademaker, in his meeting with Pakistan’s Additional Secretary (United Nations) Tariq Osman Hyder discussed the recent global developments in arms control.
Rademaker shared Washington’s vision that "in certain circumstances missile defence could contribute to regional stability." He said, "United States was ready to discuss the issue with Pakistan." The foreign ministry said both sides have agreed to continue discussions on these issues.

The Foreign Office Spokesman, Masood Khan, observed that the discussions are part of a broad ongoing dialogue on strategic and security issues.

The US official observed that the discussions are part of a multi-faceted bilateral relationship and demonstrate the US commitment to a strong, cooperative and long-term relationship with Pakistan.

Rademaker also called on Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar after the delegation level talks. Both discussed the US policies and perspective on international security. Riaz Khokhar informed the US assistant secretary about his recently concluded talks with his Indian counterpart.

AFP adds: A 10-member US delegation held discussions with Pakistani team, a foreign ministry statement said. "These discussions are part of an on-going dialogue on strategic and security issues, including regional security," the statement said. The two sides also discussed recent global developments in arms control, it said, without elaborating.
