Re: Malaysian LIMA 2005 News
if the cost is of consideration then the tiger would be out because it costs 20million dollars per helicopter whereas rooivalk costs 17.5 million dollars and the mangusta costs 15 million dollars.
if performance and capability is the consideration then the mangusta will be out since it is lighter and has limited range as opposed to the tiger, the biggest advantage that the rooivalk has over the other two competitors is that each stub wing has 3 hardpoints enabling it to carry two external fuel tanks besides its full weapons compliment.

Lima to stay put in Langkawi
BY SIRA HABIBU AND NIK KHUSAIRI IBRAHIM
LANGKAWI: The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) that helped clinch deals worth almost RM5bil this year will continue to be held on this island for years to come.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the island would be “dim” without Lima, adding that it was pertinent to support efforts to make the resort island a world-renowned destination.
“Langkawi has its own charms. We plan to continue the Lima series here. We do not have any plans to relocate the event in the foreseeable future,” he said, adding that hoteliers enjoyed full room occupancy during the biennial event.
AIR POWER: The public going out on the tarmac to view the fighter jets and other aircraft on display at the Mahsuri Exhibition Centre in Langkawi.
Najib said government agencies signed contracts worth RM3.2bil, issued letters of acceptance for contracts worth RM403mil and letters of intent for contracts worth RM344mil.
“Contracts signed between private companies are worth RM900mil,” he added.
Najib said Lima 2005 was a success as it had drawn a substantial number of decision-makers including naval and air force chiefs.
“The exhibitors are satisfied because they got the opportunity to discuss with people who were in the position to make decisions,” he said.
On the RM2.8bil contract signed for the acquisition of four units of Military Airbus A400M, Najib said the cost of the aircrafts was RM2bil and the remaining RM800mil was for purchase of equipment and anticipated cost escalation as the aircrafts would only be delivered in 2013 and 2014.
“We can afford to buy this aircraft because we are paying in stages on a long-term basis,” he added.
Najib said the purchases would be made under allocations in the Ninth, 10th and possibly 11th Malaysia Plans.
He added that government contracts worth RM4bil signed at Lima were not a total outflow of foreign exchange.
“By buying the A400M aircraft, we indirectly help CTRM (Composite Technology Research Malaysia) secure jobs almost equal to the value of the contract,'' he said.
Malaysia to train Timor Leste’s armed forces
LANGKAWI: Malaysia has agreed to train army and navy personnel from Timor Leste.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said armed forces officers would also be sent to Timor Leste to provide on-the-job guidance.
Najib said he had agreed to the training scheme following a request made by Timor Leste president Xanana Gusmao.
Gusmao paid Najib a courtesy call at the Lima 2005 Malaysia Chalet, outside the Mahsuri International Exhibition and Convention Centre here yesterday.
The Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace 2005 (Lima) 2005 exhibition ends today.
“We are providing leadership training to the army’s platoons and companies,” Najib said.
He added that three officers from the Defence Ministry would be sent to Timor Leste to discuss the matter.
“We will study the components of training to be provided.
“We will also give them guidance in areas of decision-making in the army,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
Najib said training would also be provided for Timor Leste’s Navy unit.
“They are having problems countering encroachment of large fishing boats in their waters,” he said.
“We have always provided assistance to smaller countries,” he said when asked why Timor Leste had asked for help, adding that Malaysia was also keen on helping its neighbours.
Najib added that the army had given 32 units of Handalan trucks manufactured by DRB-Deftech to Timor Leste

Foreign Military Officials Impressed By Army's 'Home Of The Brave'
MERSING, Dec 13 (Bernama) -- Built at a cost of RM422 million, Camp Iskandar located in Teluk Iskandar here is about the best equipped and most modern commando military camp in the region and one that has impressed many a foreign military visitor.
"The Home of the Brave" as it is popularly called in the Army, is named after the Sultan of Johor, who is also Colonel-in-Chief of the Kumpulan Gerup Gerak Khas (GGK) the English equivalent being the commando group, and is where the headquarters of the Army's 21st Brigade under which the GGK and units under its command come, is located.
The camp's commander, Brig Jen Datuk Harun Hitam in an interview with Bernama recently, said even military officials from the major powers were amazed at the facilities available there.
"Several I took on a tour said the facilities were first class and some even acknowledged that theirs did not match what was available here," he said, adding that they understood our seriousness in having a formidable commando force.
Harun said it had also paid handsome dividends in that these countries now sent their top units be trained together with our commandos at the camp when earlier they only allowed their second liners.
Building of the camp, which is strategically located and facing the South China Sea, began in 2001 and was completed in 2003. It was officially commissioned on Jan 1last year.
Among the facilities available there are a firing range, close quarter battle complex, amphibious complex, obstacle course, families quarters, a mosque, market and a primary school.
Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also Defence Minister, has also said the camp had a special role in the armed forces of the nation.
Asked on what would happen to the previous commando camp headquarters in Sungai Udang, Melaka now that Camp Iskandar was operational, Harun said it would not be closed down and would continue to be used as a special operations training centre.

Meanwhile, aircraft manufacturer Irkut Corporation is offering its Be-200 amphibious aircraft to Asean governments for their forest and land fire fighting operations, search and rescue mission, maritime patrol, medical evacuation, humanitarian relief, transportation and for anti-terrorists activities, said Irkut vice president Vladimir N. Suatov.
Malaysia has placed orders for 18 units of the aircraft.
