Significant increase in turkish defense and aviation industry exports

Exports by the Turkish defense and aviation industry were up 45% in the first quarter of 2012 as compared with the corresponding period last year and rose from US$ 171 million to US$ 248 million.

The bulk of the exports in the period in question was accounted for by:
Airplane and helicopter components and parts,
Components and parts of turbojets and turbo-propellers for other vehicles,
Rocket launchers, flame throwers, grenade launchers, torpedo tubes, and similar launchers,
Weapon cartridges and other ammunition,
Tanks and other armored military vehicles and their components and parts,
Other cartridges, weapon components, parts (except for those in 93.01.93.02),
Smoothbore single barrels.

North America Free Trade Area (NAFTA-USA, Canada, and Mexico) is atop the list of major export markets. Exports to that area were up 19% in the same period as against the corresponding period of last year and reached US$ 92 million. Countries in the Middle East rank second among key export markets. Exports to that region went up 163 % to approximately US$ 71 million. The European Union is the third largest export market with US$ 47 million with a 34% increase in the first quarter of 2012 over the same period in 2011. African countries, which accounted for only 0.9% in the sector’s exports in the first quarter of 2011, secured a 8% share of its exports worth US$ 19 million.
